La Plume, Pa. – Neumann University outscored Keystone College 22-11 in the third quarter of Wednesday night's Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball game at the Gambal Athletic Center on its way to a 72-47 victory. The Knights lift their record to 12-6 overall and 7-2 in conference play while the Giants slip to 5-13 on the season and 4-6 in the CSAC after suffering their fifth-straight setback.
Keystone scored the first four points of Wednesday's contest, but Neumann outscored the Giants 13-4 over the final 7:48 of the opening quarter to hold a 13-8 edge at the first break. The Knights build a nine-point advantage early in the second period before the Giants pulled to within five at 21-16 on a
Brittany Sugalski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) layup midway through the frame.
Neumann responded to Sugalski's field goal with a 12-4 run and would hold a 33-22 lead at halftime after
Dyjae Williams (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech) scored the final two points of the first half for Keystone.
AAliya Hayes led all scorers with 11 pints while Lauren Legler and Nafisa Saunders netted nine points apiece for Neumann as the Knights shot 46.2 percent from the field in the first half while going 8-11 from the free throw line.
Williams paced Keystone with eight points while
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) added five points for the Giants, who went 42.9 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes of play and 4-6 from the charity stripe.
Neumann put the game out of reach in the third quarter, doubling up the hosts 22-11 on the scoreboard. The Knights scored the first eight points of the frame and led by as many as 22 points before taking a 55-33 advantage into the fourth period.
Keystone battled until the end, cutting its deficit to 18 points at the 6:40 mark of the final frame, but the Knights used a 12-1 burst to claim a 29-point advantage.
Saunders finished with a game-high 22 points for Neumann while Hayes tallied 21 points and led all players with nine rebounds. Legler chipped in with 15 points for the Knights, who shot 51.9 percent from the floor, 50 percent from three-point range, and 66.7 percent from the line for the contest. The visitors also held a slim, 35-34 edge in rebounding and were plus-seven in the turnover department (17-24).
Williams and
Emily Hutton (North Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) tied for the team-lead with nine points each for Keystone while
Savanna Robinson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./James M. Coughlin) tallied eight points while tying for a game-high with four assists. Robinson and
Bryce Garrett (Philadelphia, Pa./John Bartram) collected two steals apiece while
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) led the squad with seven boards. The Giants connected on 33.9 percent of their field goal attempts on the evening while going 23.1 percent from long distance and 60 percent from the line.
Keystone will travel to Immaculata University on Saturday afternoon for an important CSAC showdown starting at 1:00 p.m. in Immaculata, Pennsylvania.
