Women’s Basketball Fends Off Gators, 62-59

Williams records career-highs of 18 points and 16 rebounds to power Keystone

La Plume, Pa. – A career-day from Dyjae Williams (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech) powered Keystone College to a 62-59 victory over visiting Notre Dame of Maryland University in Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon in the Gambal Athletic Center. Williams tallied career-highs of 18 points and 16 rebounds to help the Giants improve to 5-8 on the season including a 4-1 mark in conference play.
 
Keystone jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the first three minutes of Saturday's contest before Notre Dame of Maryland (4-7, 2-3 CSAC) rallied the next five points to claim a 7-6 edge midway through the opening period.  Tied at 11-apiece with 2:24 left on the clock, Williams and Savanna Robinson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./James M. Coughlin) scored back-to-back field goals to give the Giants a 15-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
 
The Giants pushed their advantage to 20-11 on a layup by Williams at the 6:35 mark of the second quarter and would lead by as many as 11 points before taking a 29-22 lead into halftime after the Gators scored the final four points of the second stanza.
 
Williams led all players with eight points and nine rebounds in the first half for Keystone while Robinson, Daynara Elysee (Spring Valley, N.Y./Ramapo), and Catia Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Bel Air) chipped in with five points.  Nina Hodanich (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) dished out five assists for the Giants, who shot 40 percent from the field over the first two quarters while going 3-12 from three-point range.
 
Zaria Comer paced Notre Dame of Maryland with six points while Dania Taylor and Stephanie Roche chipped in with five points for the Gators, who 31 percent from the floor in the opening half including a 2-7 showing from the charity stripe.
 
Trailing 33-27 midway through the third period, Notre Dame of Maryland used a 9-3 run to tie the game at 36-apiece with 1:52 left in the quarter and the two teams, who will close out the regular season on February 18 in Baltimore, headed to the fourth period deadlocked at 38-38.
 
Keystone scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter and held a 50-41 advantage midway through the frame when Emily Hutton (North Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) converted a pair of free throws.  The Gators chipped away and made it a three-point game with 26 seconds remaining, but the Giants held on for their fourth conference win in five league games this season.
 
Williams went 4-7 from the floor and 10-14 from the free throw line for her team-best 18 points while the senior's 16 points marked a game-high.  Elysee added 11 points while Robinson totaled 10 points for Keystone, who shot 30 percent from the field for the game, 14.8 percent from beyond the arc, and 78.6 percent from the line.
 
Hodanich chipped in with eight points and tied for a game-high with six assists.  Elysee led all players with three steals while Brittany Sugalski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) pulled down eight boards for the Giants, who held a 46-37 rebounding advantage and were plus-two (12-14) in the turnover department.
 
Comer led Notre Dame of Maryland with a double-double on 19 points and 11 rebounds while Justine Mudiay netted 8 points in the loss.  Roche chimed in with 11 points for the Gators, who connected on 34.5 percent of their field goal attempts while going 33.3 percent from long distance and 78.9 percent from the stripe.  
 
Keystone will travel to Gwynedd Mercy on Wednesday night for a CSAC contest starting at 7:00 p.m. in Gwynedd Valley, Pennsylvania.
