Faith Shiffer (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) scored a pair of goals to lead Keystone College to a 3-1 victory over visiting Cedar Crest College in Colonial States Athletic Conference women's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon. The Giants, who also received a goal from
Hannah Richner (Nicholson, Pa./Mountain View), improve to 5-8-1 overall and 4-5 in conference play and snap a five-game losing skid while the Falcons slip to 6-9 on the season and 2-7 in the CSAC.
The two teams were evenly matched throughout the first 44 minutes of Wednesday's contest with each side having several dangerous opportunities before Keystone took a 1-0 lead with exactly one minute remaining in the first half.
Shiffer picked up a loose ball and dribbled along the end-line before blasting a hard-angled shot that Cedar Crest goalkeeper Morgan Maddock was able to get a hand on, but not keep out of the net as the Giants went in front.
Both teams attempted six shots in the opening 45 minutes of play with Keystone goalkeeper
Rebekah Shepherd (South Canaan, Pa./Western Wayne) making four saves to keep the Falcons off of the board.
The Giants doubled their lead four and a half minutes into the second half as Richner one-timed a shot from the top of the box off the far post and in after taking a feed from
Nisa Cortes (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady). Richner's tally was her seventh of the season while the assist marked the third helper for Cortes this year.
Shiffer made a in a 3-0 game in the 54
th minute, winning a 50-50 ball in the midfield and taking a few dribbled before unleashing a screamer from 20 yards out into the upper right corner of the net for her second goal of the contest and third of the fall.
Cedar Crest got on the board in the 58
th minute as Daria Warner scored from close range as the Falcons took advantage of a long restart with Katia Olsen and Kimberly Rosano picking up assists on the tally.
The Falcons applied pressure over the final half hour of the contest, but Keystone held solid in the back and were able to maintain the two-goal cushion to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Sarah Heintz (Glenside, Pa./Abington) added one save in the second half while
Kristy Hansen (Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) also cleared a ball of the line for the Giants' late in the second half to preserve the host's two-goal advantage.
Maddock made two saves in the first half for Cedar Crest before being replaced by Cara Montanye who turned aside four shots in the final 45 minutes of the contest.
Keystone will host Cairn University on Saturday afternoon in its final home game of the season. The Giants will honor the team's seniors prior to the CSAC contest against the Highlanders, which is scheduled to kickoff at 1:00 p.m. in La Plume.
