La Plume, Pa. – Cairn University scored the final three goals in a high-scoring Colonial States Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Saturday afternoon to defeat Keystone College 5-3. The Highlanders improve to 6-10 overall and 4-6 in conference play while eliminating the Giants (5-9-1, 4-6 CSAC) from postseason contention.
Prior to Saturday's contest, Keystone honored the team's four seniors:
Sarah Heintz (Glenside, Pa./Abington),
Rebecca Lewis (Abingdon, Md./Aberdeen),
Shauna Menzella (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley), and
Jenna Moranski (Gardiner, N.Y./New Paltz).
Cairn opened the scoring in the 13
th minute of Saturday's contest as Payton Emerick escaped behind Keystone's defense, settled a bouncing ball, and found the back of the net for the game's first goal with Natalie Lyon assisting on the marker.
The Giants leveled the contest in the 20
th minute as Moranski tapped a rebound into an empty net after
Nisa Cortes (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady)'s initial shot was saved. Moranski's tally was her sixth of the year while the assist was the fourth helper of the fall for Cortes.
Riley Hayes (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison) put Keystone ahead in the 37
th minute by heading in a corner kick served in by
Faith Shiffer (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) for the first goal of her collegiate career. Shiffer's assist was her sixth of the fall for the Giants, who would hold the 2-1 edge at halftime.
Cairn knotted the game back up at two-apiece 9:16 into the second half as Lyon headed in a rebound with Courtney Novak picking up an assist on the tally.
Keystone needed just 17 seconds to reclaim the lead as
Kristen Hlavaty (Scott Twp., Pa./Lakeland) one-touched a shot home on a cross from Moranski to give the host a 3-2 lead. Hlavaty's goal was her second of the season while Moranski's assist was her eighth of the fall, tying a mark she previously matched in 2015 and shares with Kari Potter (2000) and Kim Henrie (1997).
Lyon again tied the score up for the Highlanders in the 66
th minute with second goal of the game on a one-time volley off a corner kick served in by Novak to make it a 3-3 game.
Cairn then took a 4-3 lead with 9:14 left in regulation when Sara Hayduchock ripped home a shot from close range after the ball was headed across the goal mouth by Katie Ruitto. The Highlanders closed out the scoring in the 88
th minute as Sony MacBain stole the ball from a Keystone defender and a ripped a shot just inside the far post.
Mackenzie Paugh made nine saves in 71:21 of action to pick up the win in Cairn while Haley Tinney made one stop in 18:39 of action.
Heintz suffered the loss for the Giants despite making seven saves on the day.
Both teams attempted 19 shots apiece in the high-scoring affair with the hosts holding a 13-12 edge in shots on goal. The Highlanders and Giants also had five corner kicks chances each for the afternoon.
Keystone will close out the 2017 season on Thursday night with a CSAC contest at Marywood University starting at 7:00 p.m.
