Rosemont, Pa. – Keystone College's men's soccer team clinched a first round bye in the upcoming Colonial States Athletic Conference playoffs with a convincing 5-0 victory at Rosemont College in the team's regular season finale on Tuesday night. The Giants, who will host a CSAC semifinal for the first time in program history next Thursday, finish the regular season with a 12-4-1 overall record including a 7-1-1 mark in conference play.
Keystone currently sits atop the CSAC standings with a school record 22 points in league play, one point ahead of Cabrini University who will play its regular season finale at Cairn University on Wednesday afternoon. The Cairn win would give the Giants the top seed and home field advantage throughout the CSAC playoffs while Cabrini can take the top seed with a win or a tie.
Keystone's 12 wins this fall are most since 1989 team went 12-3-2 and most since the Giants began competing at the NCAA Division III level in the 2004 season. Additionally, the team's current six-game winning streak ties last fall's club for the third-best in program history and most since the Giants posted 10 consecutive wins in the 2002 season.
Khadim Thiam (New York, N.Y./Washington Irving) gave Keystone a 1-0 lead in the 12
th minute of Tuesday's contest by netting his fourth goal of the season off an assist from
Carlos Bonilla (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge), who picked up his team-leading seventh helper of the fall.
The Giants would hold the one-goal edge at halftime while outshooting Rosemont 10-2 over the opening 45 minutes of play.
Keystone took control of the game with a pair of goals in the first 10 and a half minutes of the second half as
Andrew Lupinacci (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) netted his second goal of the year in the 50
th minute off an
Abreham Kittel (Trumansburg, N.Y./Charles O. Dickerson) assist before
Rolando Rodriguez (Linden, N.J./Linden) netted his first goal of the season in the 56
th minute with Lupinacci and Kittel picking up the helpers.
Frank Heter III (Andover, N.J./Newton) gave the visitors a 4-0 cushion in the 84
th minute by netting his second marker of the year off a
Kouassi Kouadio (Mount Pocono, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) assist before
Thiago Pinheiro (Curitiba, Brazil/Corona Del Sol) capped the scoring with his first career goal in the 87
th minute.
Steven Heintz, Jr. (Ardsley, Pa./Abington) made three saves to record the shutout victory. The clean sheet was the third of the fall and the team's seventh, the most since the 2004 campaign and tied for second most in a single season in school history.
Sean Iannelli made five saves in net for Rosemont, which finishes the 2-17 season with a 2-13-1 (1-7-1 CSAC) record.
Keystone held a commanding 27-11 advantage in shots for the game including a 10-3 lead in shots on goal. The Giants also held a 6-4 edge in corner kick chances.
Keystone's opponent and game time for next Thursday's semifinal will be determined following Tuesday's first round contests. The winners Thursday's semifinals will meet on the campus of the highest remaining seed for the CSAC championship with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
