La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College's men's soccer team advanced to the Colonial States Athletic Conference championship game for the first time in program history with a 3-1 victory over visiting Centenary University on Thursday night in a semifinal matchup. The second-seeded Giants (13-4-1) will travel to top-seeded Cabrini University (9-8-1) for Saturday's title game with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
The start time of Saturday's championship game in Radnor is yet to be determined and will be announced on Friday. The Cavaliers defeated #4 Neumann University 1-0 in Thursday's other semifinal contest. Keystone will be looking to avenge a 2-0 regular season setback suffered to Cabrini on October 3 in La Plume in Saturday's final.
Keystone (13-4-1) will play for its first CSAC title after dethroning defending conference champion Centenary (9-7-1) in an intense battle played before a spirited crowd in La Plume.
Keystone generated several dangerous chances over the first nine minutes of Wednesday night's contest, but Giants' goalkeeper
Steven Heintz, Jr. (Ardsley, Pa./Abington) came up with the first big save, diving to his left to parry away a shot from 20 yards out that was labeled for the first side-netting.
Keystone broke through with the game's first goal with exactly 18 minutes remaining in the first half as
Carlos Bonilla (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge) slipped a thru-ball to
Ibrahim Tounkara (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area), who buried his one-on-one chance with Centenary goalkeeper Devon Warne to the near post. Tounkara's goal was his sixth of the fall while Bonilla's assist was his team-leading eighth helper of the season.
The Giants would take a 2-0 lead into halftime as
Frank Heter III (Andover, N.J./Newton) scored with just four seconds remaining in the opening stanza. The senior stole a clearing attempt by the Cyclones following a late restart for the hosts and ripping a 30-yard shot into a vacant net to give Keystone the two-goal edge. Heter's tally was his third of the season.
The hosts extended their lead to 3-0 in the 56
th minute as
Khadim Thiam (New York, N.Y./Washington Irving) headed in a
James Johnson (Burtonsville, Md./James Hubert Blake) cross from the right flank. Thiam's tally was his fifth of the fall while Johnson's assist marked the first point of his collegiate career.
Centenary got on the board in the 61
st minute when Josh Weiss ripped a shot just inside the left post from 25 yards out to make it a 3-1 game, but Keystone was able to hold the Cyclones off the rest of the way to punch their ticket to their first-ever CSAC title match.
Heintz finished the night with three saves to earn his fifth victory of the season while Warne made a game-high six stops for Centenary.
Keystone held a 19-17 edge in shots for the game including a 9-4 lead in shots on goal. The Cyclones had an 8-7 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Thursday's victory extended Keystone's winning streak to seven games, the most since a 10-game streak in 2002. The Giants' 13 wins this fall are also the most since the 2002 squad went 14-3-1.
