La Plume, Pa. – Visiting FDU-Florham scored the only goal in Wednesday afternoon's non-conference field hockey game at Keystone College with 11:45 left in regulation to escape with a 1-0 victory. The Devils improve to 9-3 on the year while the Giants slide to 4-6 this fall after dropping their final non-conference game of the season.
Keystone pressured early in Wednesday's contest, generating the first penalty corner of the game and having a shot by
Shelby Croasdale (Nicholson, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) go just wide off the set play. FDU-Florham would control play the rest of the half though, firing off 12 of the final 13 shots of the period, but the Giants' defense held tight and
Megan Novak (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) made seven saves to keep the game scoreless.
The Devils held a 12-2 advantage in shots over the opening 35 minutes of play including a 7-1 lead in shots on goal.
Heaven Houck (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) picked up a defensive save for Keystone early in the second half to keep the game scoreless. At the other end,
Savanna Robinson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) got behind the FDU-Florham defense with 14 minutes remaining and looked to have the go-ahead goal on her stick, but was denied by a defensive save from the Devils' Marie Pietracatella.
FDU-Florham finally solved Novak with 11:45 left in regulation when Brooke Sherwin punched home a shot from the center of the goalmouth following a scramble in front of the Giants' cage with Chrissy Penney assisting on the tally.
Sherwin's goal would stand as the game-winner as Keystone was unable to find a late equalizer. The Giants had another penalty corner chance in the closing seconds, but were unable to get a shot off before the Devils cleared the ball to end the game.
Samantha Rubin made two saves to pick up the shutout win in the visitors cage while Novak finished with a career-high 14 saves for Keystone.
FDU-Florham outshot the Giants by a 28-6 margin on the day including a 16-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Devils also had 18 penalty corners to two for the hosts.
Robinson attempted a team-leading three shots for the Giants in the loss.
Keystone will travel to Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday for a Colonial States Athletic Conference matchup starting at 2:00 p.m.
