Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – Melissa Russo scored four goals and added an assist to lead Gwynedd Mercy University to a 7-1 victory over visiting Keystone College in Colonial States Athletic Conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon. The Griffins improve to 9-3 this fall and 2-0 in conference play with the win while Giants slip to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in the CSAC.
Russo got the scoring started in the 11
th minute of Saturday's game before setting up Madison Reese in the 16
th minute to give Gwynedd Mercy a 2-0 advantage. Brianna O'Connell deflected in a shot in 17
th minute before Shannon Carroll's unassisted goal in the 28
th minute gave the Griffins a 4-0 advantage at halftime.
Russo punched home a loose ball in the 38
th minute before completing her hat trick just over 10 minutes later to give the hosts a 6-0 cushion.
Savanna Robinson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) put Keystone on the board with 9:57 left in regulation by scoring her team-leading sixth goal of the fall on a breakaway.
Russo tallied her fourth goal of the contest with 7:22 showing on the clock by punching home a rebound to close out the scoring.
Abi Kennedy made a pair of saves in the first half to pick up the win for Gwynedd Mercy while Sarah Crane added one stop in the second half for the Griffins.
Megan Novak (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) took the loss for the visitors after making five saves in 17:52 of action to start the contest.
Emily Hawkins (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) made three saves in nearly 39 and a half minutes of action while
Kali Kishter (Alexandria, Va./Mount Vernon) turned aside four shots in 12:43 of work.
Rebecca Dempster (Boonton, N.J./Boonton) led the Giants with a pair of shots in the setback.
Gwynedd Mercy finished the day with a 21-4 advantage in shots for the game including a 19-4 lead in shots on goal. The Griffins also generated 15 penalty corner chances to one for the Giants.
Keystone will return to the Greater Philadelphia area on Tuesday afternoon to square off against Immaculata University in a CSAC tilt starting at 4:00 p.m. in Immaculata, Pennsylvania.
