Comeback Bid Falls Just Short as Keystone Drops Opener to Morrisville State

Moore lead Giants with 20 points, four assists, and four steals in 73-63 loss to Mustangs

La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College cut an 18-point fourth quarter deficit to two points in Wednesday night's season opener against visiting Morrisville State College, but was unable to complete the comeback as the Mustangs held on for a 73-63 victory in a non-conference women's basketball game  in the Gambal Athletic Center.

Wednesday's game was played in memory of Jamie Roberts, a former NCAA Division III student-athlete who died tragically in 2014 while on a cross-country bike ride to raise money for the fight against cancer.  All donations from the game are going directly to the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults, the fund for which Roberts was riding for when she passed away.

Morrisville State (1-0) scored the first seven points of Wednesday's season opener and held a 14-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter as the teams both scored seven points apiece over the final 5:17 of the frame.

The Mustangs used a 11-3 run to start the second period to claim a 25-10 advantage and held a 36-20 cushion at halftime.

The third quarter was evenly played, with both teams netting 19 points each to give Morrisville State a seemingly comfortable 55-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Mustangs scored the first field goal of the final frame and led by 16 points, 61-45, with 7:23 remaining before Keystone (0-1) embarked on an 18-4 to pull to within two points at 65-63 when Faith Shiffer (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) converted a three-point play with 1:08 remaining.

Morrisville State countered with a three-pointer on its next trip down the floor and went on to score the final eight points of the game to escape with the 10-point victory.

Haley Kilmartin scored recorded a double-double on game-highs of 21 points, including the 1,000th of her career, and 11 assists to lead the Mustangs, who also got double-digit points from Charlotte Walker (14), Alexis Campbell (13), and Tori Rockefeller (10).

The visitors shot 38.8 percent from the floor for the game while going 2-15 from three-point range and 63.3 percent from the free throw line while holding a 51-45 edge in rebounding in the contest.

Bre Moore (Charleston, W.Va./Pennwood) has a strong debut for Keystone, leading the squad with 20 points, four assists, and four steals to go along with seven rebounds. Nina Hodanich (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) added 20 points for the Giants, who were paced by Samy Farah (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls)'s nine rebounds and two blocked shots.

Mayah Kitchen (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) also pulled down seven boards for the hosts, who hit on 35.8 percent of their attempts from the field including a 23.5 percent effort from long distance and a 52.4 percent showing at the charity stripe.

Keystone will play in the Max Ziel Tournament hosted by Oswego State this weekend, opening the tournament on Friday night against Elmira College starting at 5:30 p.m. in Oswego, New York.  Host Oswego State and Medgar Evers are also in the tournament with the consolation and championship games set for 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, respectively.
