Oswego, N.Y. – Elmira College scored the first nine points of Friday evening's women's basketball game against Keystone College and never trailed in a 63-32 victory while advancing to Saturday's championship game of the Max Ziel Tournament hosted by Oswego State on Friday evening.
The Soaring Eagles (2-0) will play the winner of Friday's nightcap between host Oswego State and Medgar Evers College at 4:00 p.m. in the championship game while the Giants (0-2) will take on the loser between the Lakers and Cougars at 2:00 p.m. in the consolation game on Saturday afternoon.
Elmira outscored Keystone 17-4 in the first quarter of Friday night's contest while holding the Giants to just a pair of field goals by
Bre Moore (Charleston, W.Va./Pennwood).
Keystone pulled to within 10 points at the 7:51 mark of the second period on a
Maddy Moro (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) layup, but the Soaring Eagles countered with an 11-2 run to claim a 19-point advantage. Elmira went on to take a 34-16 lead into the break at halftime.
The two teams traded buckets early in the third frame before the Soaring Eagles put the game out of reach with a 12-1 burst that gave them a 47-19 cushion with 1:56 remaining in the quarter.
Danielle Cleary and Rachel Vespucci tied for a game-high with 15 points apiece for Elmira with Vespucci pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds in the win. Sally Hogan added 10 points for the Soaring Eagles, who shot 31.7 percent from the field for the game while going 2-12 from three-point range and 77.8 percent from the free throw line while holding a 53-49 edge in rebounding.
Moore paced Keystone with a double-double on 11 points and 11 rebounds while tying for a game-high with five steals.
Emily Hutton (North Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) and
Khaliah Gordon (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Wood) added six points for the Giants while
Samy Farah (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) pulled down eight boards on the night.
Keystone shot just 16. 7 percent from the floor in the contest including a 1-18 showing from long distance while going 52.9 percent effort at the line.
