La Plume, Pa. – Allie Warren converted a three-point play with 6.8 seconds remaining to lift visiting Bryn Athyn College to a 59-54 victory over Keystone College in an exciting non-conference women's basketball game on Sunday afternoon in the Gambal Athletic Center. The Lions, who will join Keystone in the Colonial States Athletic Conference next season, improve to 4-7 overall while the Giants slip to 2-6 on the year.
Bryn Athyn scored seven of the game's first nine points but Keystone used a 5-0 burst to tie the game at 7-7 with just under four minutes remaining in the first quarter on a
Faith Shiffer (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove) three-pointer. The Lions countered with an 8-3 spurt to close the period and hold a 15-10 advantage at the end of the first 10 minutes of play.
The visitors pushed their lead to 11 points early in the second stanza, but the Giants used an 11-0 surge to knot the game up at 21-21 with 4:31 remaining in the frame as
Mayah Kitchen (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) scored on a jumper.
After tying the game two more times over the next two minutes,
Khaliah Gordon (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Wood) gave the hosts a 27-26 edge at the 2:02 mark by hitting the front end of a pair of free throws, but Bryn Athyn would take a 29-27 edge into halftime after getting an old-fashioned three-point play to close the scoring in the first half.
The two teams went bucket for bucket in a third quarter that featured five ties and four lead changes. Kitchen gave the Giants a 37-36 edge at the 1:34 mark by converting a pair of free throws before the Lions went back in front with a three-pointer at the 1:01 mark.
Samy Farah (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) scored on a lay-up as time expired to send the game into the fourth period knotted at 39-39.
The game continued to seesaw in the fourth stanza with the teams swapping the lead four times in a period that saw the score tied seven times. Keystone netted the first three points of the frame and took a 52-51 lead with 1:52 left in regulation on a trey from
Autum Kitajima (Williamsport, Pa./Wellsboro Area). After the Lions went 1-2 from the free throw line, Shiffer connected on a pair from the line to put the Giants ahead 54-52 with 40 seconds left.
Bryn Athyn countered by tying the game up with a pair of made free throws. Following a Keystone turnover, Warren was fouled while scoring on a layup with 6.8 seconds remaining and converted the free throw attempt to give the Lions a 57-54 edge.
The Giants called a timeout and advanced the ball, but turned the ball over on the inbounds play while the Lions scoring on the steal to close out the win.
Warren finished with a game-high 17 points for Bryn Athyn and was joined in double-figures by Shaneika Smith (14) and Clayshonia Cogmon (13). Cogman pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds while Smith also had a double-double with 10 boards. Zeniyah Sanders added 10 caroms and five blocked shots for the Lions, who held a 52-43 advantage on the glass for the day.
Bryn Athyn shots 29.6 percent from the field for the contest while going 25 percent from three-point range and 59.1 percent from the line.
Kitchen paced Keystone's offense with 12 points while Farah added 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Bre Moore (Charleston, W.Va./Pennwood) finished the contest with game-highs of six steals and four assists to go along with nine points.
The Giants connected on 32.1 percent of their field goal attempts including a 25 percent showing from downtown while going 56.7 percent from the charity stripe.
Keystone will host Misericordia University in their final game of 2017 on Saturday, December 30. Opening tipoff of the non-conference tilt between the Giants and Cougars is set for 1:00 p.m. in La Plume.
