Bridgewater, Va. – Bridgewater College opened its Don Glick Classic tournament with an 88-72 victory over Keystone College in non-conference men's basketball action on Friday evening. The Eagles boost their record to 3-4 on the year with the win while the Giants fall to 4-4 overall heading into Saturday's semester finale against Eastern Mennonite University.
The two teams traded the lead four times in the opening five minutes of Friday's contest before Bridgewater used a 9-0 run to claim a 22-13 advantage with 12:53 remaining in the first half. Keystone pulled to within four points on a
Jalen Flynn (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) layup midway through the period, but the Eagles stretched the lead up to 11 points.
A
Michael Leak (Cleveland, Ohio/Leon) field goal at the 2:05 mark cut the Giants' deficit to seven points, but Bridgewater took a 44-33 lead into halftime after getting a three-pointer just before the opening stanza ended.
The Eagles netted the first two points of the second half before Keystone embarked on a 15-4 surge to pull to within two points at 50-48 with 12:16 left in regulation as
Perry Belcher (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) scored on a layup. The hosts went back up by seven points but the Giants pulled back to within a field goal as
JT Bennett (Kansas City, Kan./Washington) knocked down a pair of free throws with just under nine minutes remaining.
Bridgewater once again countered and took final control of the game with a 17-5 push that gave the Eagles a 76-62 cushion with four and a half minutes remaining. The hosts maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way to secure the victory.
AJ Horde led all scorers with 26 points for Bridgewater, Josh Cammon netted 19 points, and Ken Stanciel totaled 17 points in the win. Davrion Grier pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds for the Eagles who shot 42 percent from the field for the game including a 28 percent showing from three-point range while going 60.5 percent from the free throw line.
Bennett led Keystone with 15 points, Belcher added 12 points and team-bests of seven rebounds and four steals, and
Mark Gilliam (Philadelphia, Pa./High School of the Future) added 10 points and a game-high four assists in the loss.
As a team, the Giants connected on 35.4 percent of their efforts from the field in the contest while going 28.6 percent from long distance and 64.3 percent from the charity stripe.
The hosts held a 55-42 advantage on the glass for the game while claiming a narrow, 16-18 edge in turnovers.
Keystone will close out this weekend's tournament on Saturday afternoon against Eastern Mennonite. Opening tip between the Giants and Royals is set for 1:00 p.m. at Bridgewater.
