Scranton, Pa. – Marywood University completed a season-sweep of visiting Keystone College with a 77-68 victory in Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night. The Pacers, who won the previous meeting between the two teams, 74-68, in La Plume on January 5, improve to 5-19 overall and 5-12 in conference play while dropping the Giants to 7-17 overall and 4-13 in the CSAC.
Marywood took an 11-6 lead just over five minutes into Wednesday night's contest and would maintain a narrow edge over the next seven and a half minutes for Keystone used a 6-0 run to claim a 20-19 edge on a layup by
ShaShawn Drayton (Monticello, N.Y./Monticello) at the 7:19 mark.
Tied at 21-apiece, the Pacers connected on back-to-back three-pointers to go back up by six and would go on to take a 33-28 lead into the halftime break.
Marywood's Jeremy Ringland led all players with 10 points in the first half while Connor Shroyer chipped in with seven points for the Pacers, who shot 38.2 percent from the field over the opening 20 minutes of play including a 6-13 showing from three-point land.
Drayton paced Keystone with eight points in the opening stanza while
John Kirkpatrick (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) added seven points for the Giants, who hit on 34.3 percent of their efforts from the floor in the first half while going 3-13 from long range.
Marywood pushed its lead to 38-30 on a trey two minutes into the second half before Keystone battled back with an 14-5 run, taking a 44-43 edge on a lay-in from
Ray Mills (Philadelphia, Pa./Overbrook) with 12:39 remaining in regulation.
A 12-5 spurt by the Pacers gave the hosts a 60-53 advantage with 6:43 showing on the clock. The Giants pulled to within five points before a 7-0 run by the hosts gave Marywood a 67-55 lead with 4:21 remaining.
Keystone chipped away at its deficit with the next eight points, cutting the Pacers' lead to 67-63 with 2:05 remaining on a field goal by
Bryan Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Rialto), but Marywood went 10-12 from the line down the stretch to close out the nine-point victory.
Ringland finished with a game-high 20 points for Marywood and was joined in double-figures by James Curley (13), Tom DeFilippo (13), Tip Swartz (12), and Shroyer (11). Swartz added a team-best nine rebounds while Curley dished out four assists for the Pacers, who finished the contest shooting 38.7 percent from the field, 37 percent from beyond the arc, and 82.6 percent from the free throw line.
Kirkpatrick scored a team-high 14 points for Keystone while Williams added a double-double on 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Deion Monroe (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston ) (11) and
Mark Gilliam (Philadelphia, Pa./High School of the Future) (10) also reached double-figures in scoring for the Giants, who got four helpers apiece from Belcher and Mills.
The visitors, who held a 44-37 advantage in rebounding for the game, shot 41.3 percent from the field on the night including a 21.7 percent effort from downtown and a tough, 47.8 percent from the stripe.
Keystone will close out the 2016-17 season on Saturday with a home conference game against Cairn University starting at 3:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center. The Giants will honor the team's two seniors, Monroe and
Khyle Diaz (East Miramar, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter), prior to the CSAC tilt against the Highlanders.
