Radnor, Pa. – Cabrini University outscored visiting Keystone College 25-8 in the first quarter of Wednesday night's Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball and never looked back on its way to a 84-51 victory. The Cavaliers improve to 14-10 overall and 12-3 in conference play while the Giants will take a 6-18 (5-10 CSAC) mark into Saturday's season finale.
Cabrini held a 9-6 edge midway through the first quarter of Wednesday night's contest before closing the period with a 16-2 run to hold a 25-8 advantage at the end of the opening 10-minute stanza. The Cavaliers extended their lead to as many as 23 points in the second frame before Keystone used a 10-3 run to pull to within 15 at 40-25 with 1:47 remaining on a layup by
Dyjae Williams (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech), but the hosts would take a 44-27 lead into halftime.
Cabrini's Nomi Washington led all scorers with 13 first half points while Erin Dodds added 11 points for the Cavaliers, who went 62.1 percent from the floor over the opening two stanzas including a 3-4 effort from three-point range and a 5-8 showing at the free throw line.
Bryce Garrett (Philadelphia, Pa./John Bartram) paced Keystone with eight points while
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) chipped in with six points for the Giants, who shot 38.5 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play while going 3-10 from downtown and 4-5 from the charity stripe.
Cabrini scored the first eight points coming out of the break to claim a 54-31 lead and would hold a 20-plus point lead throughout the third period while taking a 63-37 advantage into the fourth quarter.
The Cavaliers opened the final stanza with a 9-2 burst and led by as many as 36 points in the period before closing out the 33-point victory.
Washington finished with a game-high 19 points for Cabrini and was joined in double-figures by Renee Oliver (17), Dodds (16), and Myonie Williamson (12) who also had a game-high 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double. The Cavaliers, who had a 41-33 advantage in rebounding for the game, connected on exactly half of their field goal attempts for the game including a 53.8 percent showing from beyond the arc and a 55 percent effort from the stripe.
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) led Keystone with 14 points on the night while Garrett added 10 points while blocking two shots and collecting a pair of steals. Williams pulled down a team-best nine rebounds to go along with two assists, tying with
Brittany Sugalski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) for the team-lead. Sugalski also had three steals for the Giants, who shot 34 percent from the field, 25 percent from beyond the arc, and 57.9 percent from the line on the evening.
Keystone will wrap up the 2016-17 on Saturday afternoon with a CSAC contest at Notre Dame of Maryland University. Opening tip between the Giants and Gators is set for 1:00 p.m. in Baltimore.
