La Plume, Pa. – King's College scored eight goals in a row in the middle of Sunday afternoon's non-conference women's lacrosse game at Keystone College to pull away with an 18-8 victory. The Monarchs are now 1-0 after winning their first game of the season while the Giants fall to 1-1 after suffering the setback in their home opener.
King's scored the first three goals of Sunday's contest before
Emily Hawkins (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) put Keystone on the board with a tally off of a
Savanna Robinson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) assist just over 10 minutes into the first half. The Monarchs answered with the next two goals to claim a 5-1 lead before
April Llewellyn (Plains, Pa./Coughlin) and
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) tallied back-to-back goals to cut the Giants' deficit to 5-3 midway through the period.
After another tally by King's, Hodanich netted her second goal of the game before the visitors used another three-goal run to open up a 9-4 advantage with 7:36 left in the frame.
Kayla Bain (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) score just over a minute later to make it a four-goal game, but the Monarchs netted the final four markers of the half to hold a 13-5 lead at the break.
King's scored the first four goals of the second half to open up 17-5 advantage with 19:42 left in regulation. Hodanich netted back-to-back goals to bring the Giants to within 10 goals, but the Monarchs got one back with 7:26 remaining. Hodanich closed out the scoring with her fifth tally of the afternoon with less than a minute to play.
Gabriella Morrocu led all players with nine points on six goals and three assists, Katy Higinbothom added three goals and two assists, and Kendra McCoy and Amanda Carroll added three points apiece for King's, who received five saves from winning goalkeeper Victoria Zawacki.
Hodanich finished with a team-best six points on five goals and one assist to go along with four draw controls for Keystone while
Daphne Leenas (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) recorded a game-high 15 saves in net.
Kayla Bain (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) collected four groundballs and two caused turnovers, Robinson had three groundballs and two caused turnovers, and Hodanich added a pair of caused turnovers in the loss.
For the game, King's outshot Keystone by a 41-31 margin along with a 26-18 edge in groundballs. The Monarch also collected 21 of the game's 28 draw controls.
Keystone will be idle until Saturday, March 18 when it opens Colonial States Athletic Conference play at Gwynedd Mercy University. Opening draw between the Giants and Griffins is scheduled for 11:00 p.m. in Gwynedd Valley, Pennsylvania.
