Nina Hodanich (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) scored 33 seconds into overtime to lift visiting Keystone College to a dramatic, 20-19 victory over Lancaster Bible College in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon. The Giants, who set a new program record for goals scored in a game, level their record at 2-2 on the year while the Chargers fall to 2-2 on the spring.
Lancaster Bible opened the scoring just 33 seconds into Tuesday's contest before Keystone countered with the next five goals to claim a 5-1 advantage at the 22:37 mark of the first half. After the Chargers got a goal back, the Giants netted three straight tallies to hold an 8-2 cushion with just over 10 minutes remaining in the opening stanza.
After Keystone extended its lead to 11-4, Lancaster Bible netted back-to-back goals to pull within five before
Emily Hawkins (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) and
Ayana Crawford (Washington, D.C./Elizabeth Seton) netted the final two goals of the period to give the Giants a 13-6 advantage at halftime.
The Chargers scored three of the first four goals of the second half to cut the gap to 14-9, but Keystone answered with a three-goal burst to hold an eight-goal cushion with 22:40 remaining in regulation.
The hosts countered with a 9-1 burst to tie the score at 18-apiece with 4:03 remaining. A tally by
April Llewellyn (Plains, Pa./Coughlin) with 3:35 remaining gave Keystone a 19-18 edge, but the Chargers forced overtime by scoring with just six seconds left in regulation.
In overtime, Savanna Robison won the opening draw, giving Keystone the all-important first possession and the Giants capitalized as Hodanich scored unassisted with just 33 seconds elapsed to give Keystone the thrilling win.
Hodanich finished with eight points on six goals and two assists, Hawkins tallied six goals, while Crawford (3 goals) and
Alex Smith (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) (2 goals, 1 assist) added three points apiece for Keystone. Llewellyn finished with a pair of tallies and
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) also scored while Robinson and
Brianna Nolen (Union Bridge, Md./Walkersville) added assists for the Giants.
Daphne Leenas (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) matched a season-high with 18 saves to earn the win in goal for Keystone.
Alysssa Wesner scored a game-high 10 goals for Lancaster Bible, who got eight saves in the loss from Nicole Statuti.
The Chargers held a 49-31 advantage in shots for the game and a 26-12 lead in draw controls.
Keystone will open the Colonial States Athletic Conference portion of its schedule on Saturday at Notre Dame of Maryland University. Opening draw between the Giants and Gators is set for 1:00 p.m. in Baltimore.
