Widener Rallies to Knock Off Giants, 7-4

Pride scores seven unanswered runs to snap Keystone’ six-game winning streak

Chester, Pa. – Widener University scored seven unanswered runs on Wednesday afternoon to rally back from early four-run deficit in a 7-4 victory over visiting Keystone College in non-conference baseball action.  The Pride improves to 21-9 overall with the comeback win while the Giants, who had a six-game winning streak snap, now sit at 19-9 this spring.

Keystone got off to a fast start on Wednesday afternoon as Chris Panzarella (Hazle Township, Pa./Hazleton Area) belted a two-out, three run home run in the top of the first inning to give the Giants an early, 3-0 lead.

The Giants pushed their lead to four runs in the visitor's second on an RBI double from Bray Curreri (Eldred, N.Y./Eldred Central) before Widener got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to cut its deficit to 4-2.

The Pride leveled the game at 4-4 with a pair of unearned runs in the home sixth as two runs came across on a Keystone error.

The hosts took the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning on an RBI single and added a pair of insurance runs in the home eighth as two more runs came across on the Giants' fourth error of the day.

Widener starter pitcher Matthew Guarino took a no-decision after allowing four runs on seven hits in six innings for work.  Dylan Peiffer worked a pair of scoreless innings to pick up the win while Sean Maniatis pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve the win for the Pride.

Stephen DeBellis and Greg McDonough had two hits apiece to lead the hosts with DeBellis picking up a pair of RBI for Widener, who held a 9-7 edge in hits for the game.

Keystone starter Yeison Andujar (San Juan, P.R./Programa Educativo Alcance) also took a no-decision after yielding a pair of unearned runs on five hits while striking out five batters in six innings on the mound.  Joe DeAngelis (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) was charged with one earned run on four hits while fanning one batter in 1.2 innings before Tyler Widitz (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) came in to retire the only batter he faced.

Billy Nelson (Moscow, Pa./North Pocono) led the Giants with a pair of hits while Panzarella's three RBI marked a game-high.

Keystone will resume Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Friday with a game at Cairn University.  First pitch between the Giants and Highlanders is set for 3:00 p.m. in Langhorne, Pennsylvania.
