Giants Drop a Pair at Immaculata

Mighty Macs win opener 9-6 before taking game two 13-1

La Plume, Pa. – Immaculata University remained unbeaten in Colonial States Athletic Conference softball action this spring with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Keystone College on Sunday afternoon.  The Mighty Macs won Sunday's opener 9-6 before taking a 13-1 decision in the nightcap to improve to 9-7 overall and 6-0 in the CSAC.

Game 1

In Sunday's first game, Immaculata took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single followed by a three-run home run from Michaela Petito.

Keystone (3-9, 0-4 CSAC) got a run back in the top of the second inning on an RBI base hit from Hunter Schantz (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom), but the Mighty Macs restored their four-run advantage in the home half of the frame on a sacrifice fly.

The Giants battled back to tie the score in the visitor's third as Ryleigh Fitch (Springville, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) and Schantz both connected on two-run home runs to knot the score at 5-5, but Immaculata took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning on a two run single.

The hosts added another insurance run in the sixth inning before Kaylee Hartman (Red Bank, N.J./Red Bank Regional) homered over the centerfield fence in the top of the seventh inning to close out the scoring.

Jessica Bormann improved to 5-2 in the circle for Immaculata with a complete game effort in which she allowed six runs on 10 hits while striking out three batters.

Emily Mesey had three hits for the Mighty Macs, who held a 13-10 edge in hits for the game.

Alyssa Hughes (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) suffered the loss for Keystone after being charged with nine runs on nine hits while fanning one batter in 3.1 innings of work.  Jordan Hodle (Plymouth, Pa./Lake-Lehman) worked 2.2 scoreless innings in relief with four hits against and three K's.

Schantz, Hughes, Sarah Stacey (Shickshinny, Pa./Lake-Lehman), and Antonette Scialpi (Hughestown, Pa./Pittston Area) had two hits apiece for the Giants in the game one setback.

Game 2

In the nightcap, the Immaculata took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single before erupting for nine runs on eight hits and three errors in the second inning to claim a commanding ten-run advantage.

Emily Long (Shamokin, Pa./Our Lady of Lourdes Regional) put Keystone on the board with a solo home run to centerfield in the top of the fourth inning, but that was all the offense the Giants were able to muster as the Mighty Macs tacked on three unearned runs in the home half of the fourth inning.

The hosts retired the Giants in order in the top of the fifth inning to close out the run-rule victory.

Petito picked up the win after allowing one run on four hits to go along with four strikeouts for Immaculata, who got three hits apiece from Bormann, Abigail Carter, and Annemarie Bartow in the win.

Hodle suffered the loss after surrendering six earned runs on 10 hits to go along with one strikeout in 1.2 innings before being relieved by Abby Aniska (Scott Township, Pa./Lakeland), who yielded four unearned runs on six hits over the final 2.1 innings in the circle.
