Softball Splits CSAC Doubleheader With Notre Dame

Giants win nightcap 9-1 in five innings after dropping 6-5 extra-inning affair in opener

La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College and Notre Dame University both won a game on Saturday as the sides split a Colonial States Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Edmunds Field.  The Giants (10-18, 5-11 CSAC) rebounded four a five-inning, 9-1 win in the nightcap after dropping a 6-5, nine-inning heartbreaker to the Gators (5-18-1, 4-12 CSAC) in the opener.

Game 1

Keystone jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in Saturday's opener as Shannon Lloyd (King of Prussia, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) connected on a two-run home run.

Notre Dame answered with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second inning to tie the game at two-apiece before going ahead 3-2 on an RBI single in the visitor's sixth.

The Giants rallied answered with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead.  Antonette Scialpi (Hughestown, Pa./Pittston Area) and Abby Aniska (Scott Township, Pa./Lakeland) sandwiched RBI base hits around an RBI triple from Hunter Schantz (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) as the hosts claimed a two-run edge.

The Gators forced extra innings by scoring twice in the top of the seventh inning before getting the game-winning run with two outs in the ninth inning on a Keystone error.

Hanna Morseman went the distance for Notre Dame in the circle, earning the win after allowing five runs on 10 hits while striking out one batter in the complete game performance.

Morseman and Madison King had two hits apiece for the Gators, who held a 12-10 edge in hits for the game.

Alyssa Hughes (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) took a no-decision after allowing one earned run on five hits while picking up one strikeout in 5.1 innings.  Aniska came on in relief and was charged with one earned run on five hits while fanning five batters in the final 3.2 innings.

Scialpi went 3-4 at the plate while Aniska added a pair of hits for the Giants, who committed four errors in the game one setback.

Game 2

Notre Dame's Isa Carunungan led off Saturday's nightcap with a home run to give the Gators a 1-0 lead, but that was all the offense the visitors would get as Keystone scored nine unanswered runs to walk-off with the run-rule victory.

The Giants came back with four runs on four hits and one error in the bottom of the first inning to take a 4-1 lead.  Emily Long (Shamokin, Pa./Our Lady of Lourdes Regional) connected on a two-run double to left field to put the hosts in front before Alysa Beyers (Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) hit an RBI single to center.  Beyers came around to score Keystone's fourth run on an error by the Gators on a ball put into play by Scialpi.

Lloyd broke the game open the following inning with a three-run home run, her second of the day and fifth of the season, tied with Schantz for the team-lead.

An RBI single from Long in the fourth inning gave the Giants an 8-1 lead before Scialpi came home on a Nicole Shay (Thompson, Pa./Susquehanna Community) base hit in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game.

Jordan Hodle (Plymouth, Pa./Lake-Lehman) picked up her fifth win of the season in the circle by firing a three-hitter with four strikeouts.

Lloyd, Long, and Shay had two hits apiece in the win with Lloyd and Long collecting three RBI apiece.

Notre Dame's Madison King was charged with the loss after yielding nine runs on nine hits while striking out two batters.
