La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College's women's lacrosse team is heading to the Colonial States Athletic Conference playoffs in just the third season of competition for the Giants at the varsity level. Despite dropping Saturday's regular season finale to visiting Immaculata University (9-6, 6-3 CSAC), 16-1, Keystone (6-7, 4-5 CSAC) was guaranteed a spot in the playoffs when Notre Dame of Maryland University defeated Gwynedd Mercy University 15-14 earlier in the day.
Keystone (6-7, 4-5 CSAC) will be the #6 seed in this spring's postseason conference tournament and will travel to #3 Neumann University next Saturday for a first round playoff game at a time yet to be determined.
Prior to Saturday's game, Keystone honored the team's three seniors:
Brianna Nolen (Union Bridge, Md./Walkersville),
Kelly Smith (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale), and
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area).
Riding the momentum of the playoff berth and senior day, Keystone (6-7, 4-5 CSAC) got off to a fast start on Saturday as
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) gave the Giants a 1-0 lead just 1:08 into the contest with an unassisted goal, her 28
th of the season.
The rest of the day would belong to Immaculata though as the Mighty Macs scored 16 unanswered goals the rest of the way to pull away with the win. The visitors built a nine-goal cushion at halftime by closing the opening half with a 10-0 run.
Immaculata tacked on six more goals in the second half while holding the Giants off the board to secure the #4 seed and home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
Layne Kennedy led all players with seven points on four goals and three assists while Hannah Verrecchia and Brittany Whaley added four points apiece for the Mighty Macs, who outshot the hosts 32-23 on the day while holding a 30-21 advantage in the battle for groundballs and an 11-6 edge in draw controls.
Emily Schumann turned in a strong, 17-save effort in net for Immaculata to earn the win while
Daphne Leenas (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) turned aside 12 shots for the Giants in the loss.
Emily Hutton (North Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) and
Savanna Robinson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) had three groundballs apiece for Keystone with Robinson and Amy Lllewellyn adding a pair of caused turnovers each.
Kayla Bain (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) led the squad with two draw controls on the afternoon.
Immaculata (9-6, 6-3 CSAC) clinched the #4 seed with Saturday's win and will host #5 Notre Dame of Maryland in next Saturday's other first round matchup. Cabrini University and Marywood University earned first round byes by finishing #1 and #2 in the conference standings and will host semifinal contests on Wednesday, May 3 against the winners of Saturday's quarterfinal games.
