Elmira, N.Y. –
Shelby Croasdale (Nicholson, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) scored with five minutes remaining in regulation and
Megan Novak (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) made 11 saves to lift Keystone College to 1-0 victory at Elmira College in non-conference field hockey action on Sunday afternoon. The Giants improve to 2-1 on the season with their second straight shutout victory while the Soaring Eagles fall to 0-4.
Chances were limited in the first of Sunday's contest with both teams having played the previous day as well. Elmira held a narrow, 4-3 edge in shots over the opening 35 minutes of play, but Novak and Soaring Eagles' goalkeeper Julie Hockenberger made a pair of saves each to keep the game scoreless.
Elmira started to turn up the pressure in the second half, but Novak and the Giants defense stood tall to keep the game knotted at 0-0 until the 66
th minute when Croasdale scored the game's only goal. The senior midfielder received a pass from
Savanna Robinson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) and beat Hockenberger for her second goal in as many games.
Croasdale's second goal of the season would stand as the game-winner as Novak added two more late stops to secure the shutout in her first start of the season.
Elmira, who got three saves from Hockenberger, held a 16-7 advantage in shots for the game including an 11-4 lead in shots on goal. The Soaring Eagles also generated 13 penalty corners to two for the Giants.
Hockenberger finished with three saves in the loss for the hosts.
Robinson led the Giants with three shots in the contest while Croasdale attempted two shots in the victory.
Keystone will look for its third straight win on Wednesday in a non-conference game at Wilkes University starting at 4:00 p.m.
