Edwardsville, Pa. – Wilkes University scored four second half goals to pull away with a 4-0 victory over visiting Keystone College in a non-conference field hockey game on Wednesday afternoon. The Colonels improve to 2-3 on the season with the win while the Giants fall to 2-2 on the year.
Both teams struggled to find their offensive groove in the first half with the sides evenly splitting four shots. Keystone goalkeeper
Emily Hawkins (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) and Wilkes netminder Dallas Kendra made one save apiece to keep the game scoreless at the conclusion of 35 minutes of play.
The Colonels broke the deadlock just under six minutes into the second half when Ali Dunn scored on a one-time shot after taking a crossing pass from Kayla Gronkowski. The hosts doubled their advantage just over eight minutes later as Haley Gayoski's shot bounced in off a Keystone defender with Marissa Surdy assisting on the tally which came off a penalty corner.
Wilkes opened up a 3-0 advantage in the 52
nd minute when Zoe Stepanski scored off a feed from Gayoski before closing out the scoring with just 21 seconds remaining when Dunn tallied her second marker of the day unassisted.
Kendra finished with three saves in 66:20 of action to pick up the win for the Colonels, who got one stop from Sarah Weisenfluh in the final 3:40 to preserve the shutout.
Hawkins turned aside three shots in just over 49 minutes in Keystone's cage while
Megan Novak (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) made one save in the final 21 minutes.
Daphne Leenas (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) also picked up a defensive save for the Giants in the loss.
Wilkes doubled up the Giants in shots for the game 14-7 including a 9-4 lead in shots on goal. The Colonels also generated 12 penalty corner chances on the day to four for the visitors.
Kayla Bain (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) attempted a team-high three shots in the loss while
Shelby Croasdale (Nicholson, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) and
Savanna Robinson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) took two shots apiece for the Giants.
Keystone will travel to Dover, Delaware on Saturday to take on Wesley College in a non-conference tilt starting at 1:00 p.m.
