ASTON, Pa.—Keystone College put up a valiant fight in its first-round game against Neumann University in the Colonial States Athletic Conference tournament Saturday afternoon.
The Knights, however, came up with two key spurts to pull away for a 19-10 victory, sending them into next Wednesday's semifinal game against either top-seeded Cabrini University or second-seeded Marywood University.
Despite the loss, the Giants received a four-goal effort from senior midfielder
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton), including the 100
th of her career. She joined teammate
Emily Hawkins (Glenside, Pa./Cheltenham) as the only players in Keystone history to score 100 goals when she scored an unassisted goal with one minute remaining to set the final score.
Junior midfielder Brittany Cassidy, sophomore midfielder Courtney Petrucelli, and freshmen Calie Swegon, and Ally Bee combined for 12 goals and five assists for Neumann, which improved to 10-8 on the season. The Knights, who also received two goals apiece from freshman Keri Mallon and junior Kaitlyn Conrad, scored the final three goals of the first half to break a 4-4 tie and take a 7-4 lead, then out-scored the Giants, 11-2, after Keystone closed the gap to one early in the second stanza.
Keystone, which ends its season with a 6-6 record, also received three goals and three assists from sophomore midfielder
Savanna Robinson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin), two goals from junior attacker
Alex Smith (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin), and a goal and an assist from Hawkins.
The Giants jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first four minutes behind goals by Smith and Hawkins, both of which were assisted by Robinson. The game went back and forth over the next 12 minutes until Cassidy scored twice in the final five minutes to spark a 3-0 rally to give Neumann a 7-4 halftime lead.
Hodanich opened the second half with back-to-back goals in the first minute to slice the lead to one, 7-6, but the Knights scored three straight—including two by Swegon—to ignite the game-deciding 11-2 rally.
Keystone sophomore goalkeeper
Daphne Leenas (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) and Neumann's Gabby Curry were each credited with 13 saves.
Neumann held a 40-28 advantage in shots and a slight 18-13 margin in draw controls.
