La PLUME, Pa.—The weather conditions were far from perfect Sunday afternoon when Keystone College hosted Gwynedd Mercy in a Colonial States Athletic Conference doubleheader at Edmunds Field.
With temperatures in the high 30s and breezy conditions at times, Gwynedd Mercy found a way to sweep the series, taking the first game, 6-4, despite four errors that led to four unearned runs and winning the nightcap, 7-2, thanks to two Keystone errors that led to three unearned runs.
Sophomore pitcher Melissa Hess threw two complete games to improve her record to 10-1 on the season as the Griffins improved to 14-3 overall and remained undefeated in CSAC play with a 5-0 mark. Junior
Alyssa Hughes (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) and freshman
Paige Mokychic (Beaumont, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) led the Giants, now 5-15 overall and 4-6 in the conference, with four hits.
Game 1 – Hess was humming along until a two-out error in the bottom of the seventh inning turned a sure victory into a nail-biter. Keystone took advantage by scoring two runs to slice the lead to two and had the winning run at the plate before Hess was finally able to get a strikeout—her fifth of the game—to end Keystone's rally. Sophomore Amanda Clark led the Griffins with three hits, including a home run and a double, and sophomores Lauren Waller and Erin Hallahan finished with two hits and an RBI apiece. Junior Alex Kinal drove in two runs with a pinch-hit single in the sixth inning. For the game, Gwynedd Mercy finished with 11 hits.
Trailing 5-1, Keystone cut the lead to three in the sixth inning when Mokychic doubled to right field and came around to score on an error on a ball hit by sophomore
Shannon Lloyd (King of Prussia, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll). Mokychic and Hughes combined for five of the Giants' eight hits.
Game 2 – The Giants opened up an early 1-0 lead before the wheels came off with two errors that led to three unearned runs during a six-run rally by the Griffins in the fifth inning. Gwynedd Mercy added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI single by Hallahan, who finished with two hits, including a double. Gwynedd Mercy also received three hits, including a double, from sophomore Tori Sherwood and two hits apiece from junior Beck Christoffers, Kinal, and Clark.
Hughes had two hits for the Giants, including a double, and Hartman, Mokychic, and sophomore
Kassadi Woods (Trumansburg, N.Y./Charles O. Dickerson) and
Mariah Loughney (Jermyn, Pa./Lakeland) contributed one apiece.
