Softball Swept at Wilkes in Midweek Action

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The Keystone College softball team dropped a doubleheader at Wilkes University on Wednesday, dropping game one 14-7 and the nightcap 4-3 in non-conference action.

Keystone drops to 4-6 overall and the Giants are slated to play at Penn College on Friday, March 22 and travel to Saint Elizabeth on Saturday, March 23.

Wilkes improves to 8-7 on the year and the Colonels host Eastern on Saturday, March 23.

Wilkes 14, Keystone 7 (Game One)

Junior Shannon Lloyd (King of Prussia, Pa./Archbishop John Carroll) ripped a three-run homer in the top of the first to hand the Giants an early 3-0 lead.

The Colonels were able to knot the game up at 3-3 in the third but Keystone answered back with an RBI single from junior Mariah Loughney (Jermyn, Pa./Lakeland) and a two-run double to left by senior Samantha Monetti (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) to go ahead 6-3 in the fifth frame.

Wilkes scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth and four in the bottom of the sixth and took advantage of six costly Keystone errors.

Overall, the Giants tallied 12 hits as Lloyd went 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBI. Monetti and Loughney both went 2-for-4.

Senior Alyssa Hughes (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) struck out three in the circle and gave up six earned runs while walking two.

Wilkes 4, Keystone 3 (Game Two)

The Giants claimed a 3-1 lead after three innings of play but gave up three runs in the fourth and fifth frames.

Wilkes went ahead 1-0 in the first before a Paige Mokychic (Beaumont, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) two-run homer put Keystone ahead 2-1 in the third. Lloyd followed with her second long ball of the day - a solo shot in the third - to give the Giants back-to-back shots and go ahead 3-1.

The Colonels scored on an RBI groundout in the fourth and a triple down the right field line in the fifth put Wilkes ahead for good, 4-3.

Keystone finished with nine hits as Lloyd went 2-for-4.

Sophomore Lauren Smith (Scotrun, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) suffered the loss, tossing 4 ⅔ innings, striking out two while walking five. Freshman Hannah Dickson (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) threw the final 1 ⅓ frames, giving up just one hit.
