Women’s Lacrosse Drops Nailbiter to Wilkes 11-10

La PLUME, Pa. – Despite jumping out to a 5-1 lead in the first half, the Keystone College women's lacrosse team could not hold on and fell to visiting Wilkes University 11-10 in the final non-conference contest of the year for the Giants on Wednesday afternoon.

With the defeat, Keystone drops to 1-3 and the Giants host Rosemont College (0-3) in the CSAC opener on Saturday, March 23 at 1 p.m. Wilkes improves to 4-1 with the win and the Colonels travel to Maritime College on Saturday, March 23 at 1 p.m.

Junior Savanna Robinson (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) led all scorers with five goals and finished with six points on 11 shots. Robinson also tallied five draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Senior Alex Smith (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) finished with two goals, one assist and two draw controls. Junior April Llewellyn (Plains, Pa./Coughlin), seniors Kayla Bain (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) and Nisa Cortes (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) all finished with one goal each.

Junior keeper Daphne Leenas (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) suffered the loss despite making 12 stops in the cage. Leenas is averaging 11.75 saves per game, which is third best in the CSAC.

Bain scored less than two minutes into the game while Smith and Robinson followed with goals to give the Giants a 3-0 edge less than five minutes into the action. Llewellyn and Robinson tallied goals to give Keystone a 5-1 cushion.

The Colonels were able to cut the lead to 6-5 at halftime and outscored the Giants 6-4 in the second half. With 4:49 left, Wilkes led by two, 11-9, before Smith cut the deficit to one, 11-10, with 4:28 to play. Unfortunately, the Giants only fired off one shot the rest of the way.
