Softball Drops Twin Bill to Cedar Crest

Keystone fell to the Falcons, 3-1 and 6-2, Saturday afternoon.

La PLUME, Pa. – Keystone softball team dropped a twin bill to Cedar Crest, 3-1 and 6-2, Saturday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference play at Edmunds Field.

The Giants fell to 6-8 in the conference and are vying for the fifth and final spot in the CSAC Championships with Notre Dame of Maryland close behind at a final conference record of 7-9.

Keystone needs to win its remaining games in Sunday's doubleheader against Clarks Summit to avoid a tiebreaker scenario.

Cedar Crest improved to 12-4 CSAC, 19-12 overall.

Saturday's doubleheader was also Keystone softball team's Suicide Awareness Game.

Game 1: Cedar Crest 3, Keystone 1

The Falcons got on the scoreboard in the second inning on Renee Snyder's RBI-single to right field to score Alexis Kline from second base.

The score remained through the bottom of the third when the Giants got one back.

Alyssa Booth (Holland, Pa./Council Rock North) got on with a two-out infield single before advancing on a wild pitch. Brooke Staple (Carbondale, Pa./Carbondale Area) followed with a sharp single off the pitcher's glove as the second baseman's throw attempt to first base was mishandled, allowing Booth to round third and score.

The deciding runs came in the top of the fifth as Cedar Crest's Nicole Santaniello and Brianna Lankford each popped solo homers to take a 3-1 lead.

Keystone would only get one runner on base the remainder of the game – Booth on a single – as Falcons pitcher Corinne Mundy closed out the game for the win.

Game 2: Cedar Crest 6, Keystone 2

Cedar Crest got on the board with runs in the third and fourth innings on RBI singles from Renee Snyder and Delaney VanBuskirk, respectively.

The Keystone bats awakened in the bottom of the fourth inning with Jordan Frye (Cheltenham, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic), Elle Olivero (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) and Mara Brooks (Manassas, Va./Brentsville) hitting consecutive singles to load the bases with one out, but a strikeout and a fouled pop up ended the threat.

Cedar Crest responded with six singles in the top of the fifth, plating four runs for a 6-0 lead.

The Giants got on the scoreboard with consecutive hits once again, but this time, cashing in with a Paige Mokychic (Beaumont, Pa./Tunkhannock Area) double and a Frye single to plate a pair of runs.

BB Aquila closed out the final two innings in the pitching circle for the Falcons.
