CAMDEN, N.J. - Despite outhitting Rutgers-Camden 10-5, the Keystone College baseball team came up just short on Tuesday night, falling to the Scarlet Raptors 3-2 in non-conference action.
With the loss, the Giants drop to 8-12 and are scheduled to host the University of Scranton (17-3-1) on Thursday, April 7 at 4 p.m. The Scarlet Raptors improve to 12-9 and will host Rutgers-Newark (10-8) on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in an NJAC contest.
Camden jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, thanks to a run on a wild pitch, an RBI groundout, and a run-scoring double. The score remained 3-0 in favor of the home team until the eighth, when RJ Gouldsbury (Throop, Pa./Mid Valley) scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit, to 3-1.
In the ninth, with two on and one out, Gouldsbury came through with a double to left to score Bobby Pokorney (Margate, Fla./J.P. Taravella). Unfortunately, the ball became lodged at the bottom of the fence and was deemed a ground-rule double, which negated the tying run to score. Camden got out of the jam with force-outs at home and second base to end the game.
Gouldsbury finished the night 2-for-5 with the double and RBI while Pokorney - the CSAC Hitter of the Week - went 2-for-4 with a triple at the leadoff spot.
Vince Montone (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Township) enjoyed a 2-for-4 outing with a double while JD Barrett (Moosic, Pa./Dallas) collected a base knock and drew two walks. Evan Fallwell (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino), Pedro Abreu (Bronx, N.Y./Santa Teresa), and Jason Thomas (Miami, Fla./Barbara Goleman) tallied singles for the Giants.
Julian Gonzalez (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) earned the starting nod but suffered the loss, as the righty tossed five frames with five strikeouts, six groundouts, and two flyouts. Patrick Adamski (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) threw the final three frames in relief, striking out three and allowing just one hit.
