Second-Quarter Surge Powers Women’s Basketball Past Penn State Berks

LA PLUME, Pa.- The Keystone College women's basketball team came away with a 65-43 victory over Penn State Berks Wednesday night in United East action.

After a slow opening quarter, the Giants found their rhythm in the second period, outscoring the Nittany Lions 27-9 to take control of the game.

Keystone shot 55 percent in the quarter and forced multiple turnovers that turned into easy transition points, building a 36-23 lead at halftime.

Tayana Bibbins (Lincoln, Del./Sussex Technical) led all scorers with 20 points to pace the Giants. Phaneirra Barnett (Baltimore, Md./Edgewood) posted a strong double-double with 12 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Krista Cortazar (Throop, Pa./Mid Valley) added 11 points, while Angelise Sanchez (Atlanta, Ga./Ocoee) chipped in 10 to give Keystone four players in double figures.

Keystone's defense set the tone, forcing 25 Nittany Lions' turnovers and turning them into 25 points. The Giants also held the visitors to 25.4 percent shooting from the field and just 4-of-15 from three-point range.

Penn State Berks attempted to close the gap in the third quarter, but Keystone answered with timely baskets and continued pressure on the defensive end. The Giants carried a 45-37 advantage into the final period before pulling away with an 18-point fourth quarter to seal the win.

Keystone finished the night shooting 36.8 percent from the field and held a 46-50 edge on the glass, while also outscoring Berks 34-12 in the paint.

Keystone (4-17, 3-7 United East) visits St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday afternoon.
