Hess Homers as Giants Fall to #10 Rowan in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Keystone College baseball team wrapped up its spring trip in Florida on March 12, battling nationally-ranked Rowan University, falling to the Profs 18-1.

Both teams opened the game with strong pitching. Keystone starter Ethan Pollack (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) worked through early traffic, striking out four batters in the opening innings and keeping Rowan off the board through the first two frames. Defensively, the Giants backed their starter with clean fielding and strong positioning as the game remained scoreless early.

Keystone also created a scoring opportunity in the third inning when Dee Rice (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) singled and aggressively moved into scoring position after stealing second and advancing to third on an error, demonstrating the Giants' speed and aggressive base running.

Rowan pushed across three runs in the third inning after loading the bases with a single and two walks. A hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice fly allowed the Profs to take the lead. Rowan added additional runs in the middle innings, but Keystone pitchers continued to compete and record key strikeouts to limit further damage.

Relievers Noah Parks (Seattle, Wash./Tahoma), Brandon Valles (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North), Chris McGee (Montrose, Pa./Montrose Area), and Anthony Mierez (Granby, Conn./Rockville) combined to keep the Giants within reach at various points, highlighted by strikeouts and key outs against the Rowan lineup.

Keystone broke through offensively in the bottom of the seventh inning when Benny Hess (Reading, Ohio/Reading Community) launched a towering solo home run to left-center field. The blast energized the Giants' dugout and gave Keystone its first run of the evening.

Hess finished the game with one hit and the team's lone RBI, providing the offensive highlight for Keystone.

The Giants collected five hits in the game, with contributions coming from across the lineup.

  • Colson Bennett (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) recorded a single in the sixth inning.
  • Cooper Fesh (Bethel, Conn./Bethel) added a base hit in the fourth.
  • Dillion Bird (Westlake, La./Sulphur) singled in the fifth inning.
  • Dee Rice (Spartanburg, S.C./Dorman) reached base with a hit and also stole two bases, showcasing Keystone's speed.
  • Benny Hess (Reading, Ohio/Reading Community) delivered the highlight with his seventh-inning home run.

Keystone used multiple pitchers throughout the contest as the staff combined for 14 strikeouts against the Rowan lineup. Late in the game, Kevin Adamson (Vienna, Va./Paul VI Catholic) came on in relief and recorded the final outs for the Giants on the mound.

The Giants return north and are scheduled to play at Valley Forge on Monday, March 16 in the United East opener. Keystone is slated to host Oswego State on March 17 in the 2026 home opener.
