AUBURNDALE, Fla.- The Keystone College baseball team erupted for 12 runs in the first two innings and held off a late rally to defeat Maritime College, 17–11, on Thursday morning at the RussMatt Invitational.
The Giants wasted little time getting the offense going. In the top of the first inning, an RBI walk by Emilio Portes (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Pace) opened the scoring before Dillion Bird (Westlake, La./Sulphur) delivered a three-run double to give Keystone a 4-0 lead.
Keystone then broke the game open with an eight-run second inning. Dante Ruby (Archbald, Pa./Valley View) drove in a run with a walk before Portes doubled home two more. Ethan Schimony (State College, Pa./State College Area) added a sacrifice fly and Bird followed with an RBI single as the Giants built a commanding 12-0 advantage.
Maritime responded in the bottom of the second inning. Randy Ventura launched a two-run home run to start the comeback, and RBI doubles from Chris Picarella and Alex Bardi trimmed the deficit.
Keystone continued to add on throughout the middle innings. Colson Bennett (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) singled home a run in the fourth and Ruby later scored on a wild pitch in the fifth.
The Privateers refused to go away. Picarella's two-run homer in the fourth cut the lead to seven, and Joey Goodman blasted a two-run home run in the fifth to make it 14-8. Maritime continued the rally in the seventh when Goodman tripled home two runs and Dylan Payano added an RBI double to bring the Privateers within three.
The Giants sealed the victory in the ninth inning. Schimony drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt before Bird delivered again with a two-run single.
Bird led Keystone offensively with three hits and six RBIs, while Bennett had two hits, two RBIs and three walks. Ruby scored four runs, and Portes added three RBIs.
On the mound, Luke Baker (Schuylkill Haven, Pa./Blue Mountain) earned the win after pitching five innings and allowing eight runs on nine hits. Jacob McTigue (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) and Cooper Ryan (State College, Pa./State College Area) combined four innings of relief, with Ryan tossing 2.1 scoreless innings to close out the game.
