John Masten

John Masten serves as head coach of Keystone College's men's and women's tennis programs.  He was named head coach of the men's team in August of 2016 after completing a four-year playing career for the Giants and was tabbed to lead the women's team in July 2017.

During his first season as head coach of the men's team in 2017, the Keystone posted a 1-11 overall record while going 1-6 in conference play.  Masten earned his first collegiate coaching victory on April 12 when the Giants defeated Rosemont College 5-4 in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) match.  Three of Masten's players were named to the CSAC All-Academic following the season for their accomplishments in the classroom.

In 2018, Keystone won two more matches than the previous year and finished with a 3-8 overall record, which included a 2-5 mark in the CSAC, and had a player, senior Steven Heintz, Jr., named honorable mention all-conference in a voted conducted among the league's head coaches. Heintz led the Giants with seven wins in singles play and freshmen Sean Lape and Derek Yenser were next with four victories apiece.  The return of Lape and Yenser, along with sophomores Colin Franko and Tim Dunbar and freshman Alec Greenip, gives Masten a firm foundation for future development of the program.

The women's program also improved its win output under Masten's leadership this past season.  The Giants were 3-8 overall (3-7 CSAC) after going 1-11 (1-9 CSAC) during the 2016 fall semester. Senior Rebecca Lewis led the Giants with a 6-3 record in singles and was named honorable mention all-CSAC and senior Kristy Hansen and junior Devinne Scott were next in the win column with five victories apiece.

An Honorable Mention All-CSAC singles player as a sophomore, Masten was also honored as a CSAC All-Sportsmanship Team selection as a junior and was a CSAC All-Academic Team honoree as a freshman.  He finished his career tied for the eighth-most overall wins and sits seventh all-time in overall conference wins.  Masten also ranks seventh all-time in singles wins – both overall and conference – in a career and also sits in the top-10 for overall singles wins in a season, conference singles wins in a season, career overall doubles wins, and career conference doubles wins.

Masten has served as a Tennis Instructor at the Delaware Youth Center for three years where he provides basic and advanced training as well as teaching rules of the sport to youngsters while developing their leadership skills.  He has also been a sports counselor, camp leader, and lifeguard at the Delaware Youth Center for four years.  Masten has been active in local communities as well, coaching youth basketball and soccer while volunteering for the Red Cross and serving on the Youngsville Environmental Committee.

Masten, who competed for the Giants’ track & field team for two seasons and was a member of the Eco Club, graduated from Keystone in May of 2016 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business to go along with a minor in Sport and Recreation Management.
