Pitching Dominates as Keystone and St. Scholastica Split a Pair of 1-0 Games

Rogers throws three-hitter in opener in walk-off win

Ft. Pierce, FL – Pitching reigned supreme on Tuesday as Keystone College's baseball team split a pair of 1-0 decisions with the College of St. Scholastica as the Giants continued their Spring Break trip.  Rob Rogers (Islip, NY/Islip) pitched a complete-game, three-hitter in the opening game as Keystone picked up a walk off win.  In the nightcap, Patrick Robinson (Goshen, NY/Goshen) was also outstanding on the mound for the Giants, giving up just four hits, but this time it was the Saints who scored the game's lone while holding Keystone to three hits.

The 12th ranked Giants move to 9-4 on the season after the Tuesday's spit while the Saints', who won the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference last season and are also receiving votes in the latest national Top-25 rankings, go to 4-3 overall.

In Tuesday's opener, Keystone threatened to score first, putting runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the third inning, but St. Scholastica escaped the jam by getting a groundout, and after an intentional walk to load the bases, got an inning-ending strikeout.

The Saints threatened in the top half of fifth inning, getting two of their three hits for the game in the inning along with a walk, but Rogers escaped the jam by forcing a pop out with two outs.

Still scoreless headed into the bottom of the seventh, Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) and Miquel Castano (Miami, FL/Miami Springs) both reached on errors to give the Giants runners on second and third with nobody outs.  After Domenick Montanaro (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) was intentionally walked to load the bases, Tyler Gurman (Bronx, NY/Lehman) stepped up to the plate as a pinch hitter and drove a base hit to left field to bring home Guerrero and give the Giants the walk off win.

Rogers, who was named to the CSAC Pitcher of the Week Honor Roll on Monday, picked up right where he left off after his 10-strikout performance against Misericordia University on Friday, fanning six batters while allowing just three hits and one walk while going to distance to earn the shutout win.  Rogers' shutout broke a streak of 180 games in which the Saints had scored at least one run.

Kyle Jensen was strong on the hill for St. Scholastica, allowing three hits by the Giants and a pair of walks while striking out four while taking on the loss.

In the nightcap, the Saints got the only run they would need in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-out rally.  Austin Colvard got things starting with a bunt single and advanced to second on a Kyle Flagstad base hit.  Colvard would then come around to score on an error by the Giants before Keystone could get the third out of the inning.

The Giants were again held to just three hits, with Guerrero hitting a two-out triple in the top of the first and Castano and Riscica adding singles in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively.  The Saints' got five strikeouts in five innings of work by Mickie Keuning before Thomas Rogers took over in the sixth and worked a two-inning save.

Robinson was solid on the mound for Keystone, yielding just four hits without a walk to go along with six strikeouts in a complete-game loss.

Keystone will be back in action on Wednesday morning with a single game against Wesley College scheduled for 10:00 a.m. in Vero Beach, FL.
