Eighth-Ranked Kean Edges Keystone, 1-0

Unearned run in third inning stands as lone score in tight game

Union, NJ - Kean University, currently ranked eighth in the country, scored an unearned run in the third inning and made it stand as the Cougars edged 12th ranked Keystone College in non-conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon, 1-0.  Kean improves to 10-4 on the season while the loss drops the Giants' record to 11-5 overall.

Keystone threatened in the top half of the third inning of Sunday afternoon's game, putting runners on second and third after a sacrifice bunt by Domenick Montanaro (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township), but Kean starter Kevin Herget stranded the Giants' runners by getting a popout followed by a strikeout and the Cougars took advantage of a throwing error by the Giants in the home half of the inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Miquel Castano (Miami, FL/Miami Springs) hit a one-out double in the top of the sixth inning and advanced to third on a fielders' choice, but again Herget stranded a runner in scoring position by getting a groundout to end the inning.  Keystone put runners on first and third in the eighth inning on a pair of singles by Jose Garcia (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) and Montanaro, but Garcia was caught stealing and Herget got another inning-ending groundout.

Herget completed the complete game shutout with a 1-2-3 ninth inning and finished the day scattering six hits by the Giants while walking two and striking out seven.   Nick Ramagli led the Cougars, the reigning New Jersey Athletic Conference champion and 2012 NCAA Division III World Series participant, offensively with a 3-4 performance at the plate.

Keystone starter Rob Rogers (Islip, NY/Islip) suffered a tough loss on the mound, allowing just the single unearned run while striking out eight and yielding seven hits and two walks.

Montanaro, Castano, Garcia, Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY/James Monroe), Gaston Rojas (Carmel, NY/Carmel), and Cory Shaver (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) accounted for the Giants' six hits on the day.

Keystone returns to action on Wednesday afternoon when they visit Widener University in a non-conference game scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Chester, PA.
