Keystone Defeats Pair of Defending Conference Champions on Opening Day of Spring Break Trip

Giants edge Misericordia 4-3 in opener before dropping La Roche, 8-3

Ft. Pierce, FL – Keystone College's baseball team, currently ranked 13th in country, improved to 7-1 on the season with a pair of wins over 2012 conference champions and NCAA Tournament participants on Friday as the Giants opened their Spring Break trip in Florida.  Keystone claimed a tight, 4-3 win over defending Freedom Conference champion Misericordia University in Friday's opener before scoring an 8-3 decision over La Roche College, the reigning Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference champion, in the nightcap.

Keystone opened the scoring in the home half of the second inning of the contest against Misericordia (9-3) after recording three-straight singles, the last of which was an RBI base hit by Jose Garcia (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) that plated Tyler Gurman (Bronx, NY/Lehman), who opened the two-out rally with an infield single.

The Cougars tied the contest in the fifth inning with an RBI double, with Steve Sulkoski hitting an RBI double that brought home Andrew Tressa.  Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY/James Monroe) opened up the Giants' half of the sixth inning with a single before advancing to third on a Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) single to right.   Molina would then score on a passed ball to give Keystone a 2-1 advantage, and the two teams would trade runs over the next two innings.

Misericordia's Chris Boroch scored on a bases loaded walk in the seventh inning before Keystone again went ahead in the home half of the frame as Garcia opened the inning with a double and would later score on a single by Miquel Castano (Miami, FL/Miami Springs).

The Cougars made it a 3-3 ballgame in the top of the eighth Julian Faria opened the inning with a double and would later come around to score on a wild pitch, but Keystone again had an answer in their half of the inning as Guerrero reached base after being hit by a pitch before advancing on a sacrifice bunt by Cody Darley (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast).  Guerrero would come around to score by advancing on a pair of wild pitches by the Cougars.

Rob Rogers (Islip, NY/Islip) struck out 10 batters in six innings of work and scattered four hits and walking three while surrendering a single run.  Adam Krebs (Commack, NY/Commack) went two innings, giving up two runs while striking out a pair of batters before Patrick Robinson (Goshen, NY/Goshen) worked a scoreless ninth to seal the victory, giving up a hit while striking out two.

Gurman, Garcia, and Ricky Riscica (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) had two hits apiece to lead the Giants offense, which finished with 10 hits in Friday's opening game.

Sulcoski had three of Misericorida's six hits, who got seven innings of work on the mound from starter Evan Robaczewsk, who took a no decision after striking out five and allowing hits.  Justin Haddix took the loss after allowing the game-winning run in the eighth inning.

In the nightcap, Keystone improved to 7-1 on the season with an 8-3 victory over La Roche, who saw their record drop to 6-3 for the spring.

Gaston Rojas (Carmel, NY/Carmel) led the Giants' offense with a 2-3, four RBI performance that included a home run while Guerrero also went 2-3 with a homer and three RBIs.   Riscica and Miguel Castano added two hits apiece in the victory.
