Giants Notch Second Straight Shutout With 6-0 Victory Over Cyclones

Keystone completes regular season series sweep of Centenary

La Plume, PA – Keystone College's baseball team picked up their second straight shutout win on Sunday afternoon, defeating Centenary College 6-0 in Colonial States Athletic Conference action.  A day after blanking Marywood University 8-0 at PNC Field, Patrick Robinson (Goshen, NY/Goshen) scattered three hits in eight innings of work to help the Giants, ranked 13th in the country, improve to 21-7 on the year and 10-1 in conference play.

Kevin Catherina (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Mary (Rutherford)) led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Austin Straub (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) then brought Catherina home with a single to centerfield for the game's first run.

The Giants loaded the bases with no outs in the home half of the third inning and Rick McLaughlin (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) worked a walk to bring home Catherina from third.

Centenary threatened in the top of the fifth inning when, with one a runner on first, Mike Crowe hit a double to right-center.  The Cyclone runner attempted to score from first on the play, but Keystone second baseman Miquel Castano (Miami, FL/Miami Springs) gunned down the runner at the plate with a great relay throw.

In the home fifth, Tyler Gurman (Bronx, NY/Lehman) hit a deep double off the base of the right field fence and after moving to third on a wild pitch, scored an a McLaughlin sacrifice fly and Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) followed by blasting a solo home run deep over the left field wall to push the host's lead to 4-0.

A bunt single by McLaughlin brought Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY/James Monroe) home with the Giants' fifth run in the bottom of the seventh inning and Guerrero hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Gurman to give Keystone a 6-0 advantage heading into the eighth inning.

Robinson was dominant on the mound again for the Giants, allowing just three hits and two walks in eight scoreless innings of work while striking out six batters to improve to 5-1 on the season.  Felix Lopez (Brooklyn, NY/Grand Street Campus) closed out the win by retiring the Cyclones in order in the ninth including two by strikeout.

McLaughlin finished the afternoon 2-2 at the plate with a walk and three RBIs to lead Keystone's offense, who got two hits and two runs scored from Gurman.  Guerrero finished with a pair of RBIs, Catherina scored twice, and Straub also added a pair of hits for the Giants.

Centenary starter Jimmy Kraivec suffered the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in five innings of work.  Chad Frankenfield allowed two runs on three hits in two innings of work while Danny Derner worked a perfect final inning for the Cyclones, who fall to 16-14-1 on the season and 6-6 in the CSAC.

Crowe, Joe Forcellini, and Ryan Caparoni accounted for Centenary's three hits in the game.
