Giants Win Ninth Straight Game, Defeat Highlanders 16-7

Keystone uses 10-run eighth inning to break open 6-6 game



La Plume, PA – Keystone College sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs in the eighth inning of Tuesday's Colonial States Athletic Conference baseball game on their way to a 16-7 victory over Cairn University, extending their winning streak to nine games.  The Giants, currently ranked 14th in the nation, improve to 28-7 this spring and 16-1 in conference play while the Highlanders fall to 6-27 overall and 1-14 in league play.
 
Cairn took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Austin Arseneau that scored Jeremy McAlack who reached on a leadoff walk.  The Highlanders made it a two-run game in the top of the visitor's third, loading the bases with nobody out before Chad Hollinger scored  on Arseneau's second sacrifice fly of the contest. 
 
Keystone put runners on the corners with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning after a walk to Kevin Catherina (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Mary (Rutherford)) and a seeing-eye single to right by Austin Straub (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius)Gabriel Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Perkiomen School) then hit a sacrifice fly to score Catherina and Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY/James Monroe) followed with an RBI single to center that plated Straub and tied the game at 2-2. 
 
Rick McLaughlin (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) led of the home sixth with a base hit to center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical)Gaston Rojas (Carmel, NY/Carmel) then hit an RBI single to left that scored McLaughlin from second to give Keystone their first lead of the game before coming around to score on a single off the bat of Miquel Castano (Miami, FL/Miami Springs).  Catherina then drove a single deep down the right field line, scoring Castano and the Giants pushed their lead to 6-2 when Straub bunted home Catherina from third. 
 
The Highlanders put together a big two-out rally in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game.  Caleb Lang hit a two-run single to center to cut the visitor's deficit to a pair of runs before Cairn got RBI base hits from Arseneau and Kenneth Searle to leave the contest at 6-6.
 
Rojas was hit by a pitch leading off the bottom of the eighth inning for Keystone and Castano reached on a bunt before the both coming around to score on a throwing error on a ball bunt by Catherina to put the Giants back in front.  Ramirez followed with a two run single to left field that scored Catherina and pinch runner Jose Garcia (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central)
 
Molina then brought home Ramirez with an RBI base knock up the middle before scoring on a Guerrero single to center to push Keystone's lead to 12-6.  Castano then ripped a two-run single to right center to give the host's an eight-run advantage.  Garcia followed with a two-run base hit to right center to score the Giants' ninth and tenth runs of the inning. 
 
The Highlanders would add an unearned run in the ninth inning to close out the scoring.
                                                    
Castano went 3-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored to lead Keystone's offense while Ramirez went 3-4 with three RBIs in the win.  Straub, Molina, McLaughlin, and Rojas added two hits apiece for the Giants, who had 18 hits on the day.  Catherina scored four runs while Rojas joined Castano with three runs scored in the victory.
 
Keystone starting Zachary Duffy (Rockville Center, NY/Oceanside) went four innings on the mound and allowed two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out a pair of batters.  Michael Meszoros (Bridgeport, CT/Bassick) entered the game in the fifth inning and went 2.2 innings, yielding four runs on seven hits to go along with a pair of strikeouts.  Justin Martinez (Bronx, NY/Clifton) was credited with the win after recording three strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work while Robert Minaya (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) closed out the game with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth inning.
 
Cairn starter Dean Diernbach went six innings and allowed six runs on 10 hits while striking out three and walking a pair of batters.  Jeremy West gave up three runs on two hits in an inning of work while taking the loss; Phil Knower gave up six runs in 0.2 innings of work while Andrew Gordon surrendered a run before getting the final out of the eighth inning.
 
Lang went 3-5 with a pair of RBIs for Cairn, who got a 2-3, three RBI performance from Arseneau in the loss.
 
Keystone will close out the conference portion of their schedule on Wednesday afternoon at Immaculata University.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Immaculata, PA.
