Clarks Summit, PA –
Julio Pertuz (Caracas, Venezuela/EU Noestra Senora de las Mercedes) scored two goals, including the game-winning tally 6:06 into overtime to lift Keystone College to an exciting, 2-1 victory over Baptist Bible College in Colonial States Athletic Conference men's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon. The Giants, now 9-7 on the season and 3-5 in conference play, keep their CSAC playoff hopes alive with the win while snapping a three-game losing skid.
Keystone will be scoreboard watching this evening as Gwynedd Mercy plays at Immaculata University beginning at 7:00 p.m. A win or tie by the Griffins would eliminate the Giants from playoff contention while a win by the Mighty Macs would keep Keystone's postseason aspirations afloat heading into Saturday's regular season finale.
Keystone dominated play in the first half, outshooting Baptist Bible (5-13, 2-6 CSAC) by a 9-1 margin over the opening 45 minutes of play. The Giants nearly took the lead in the opening minutes of the contest, but a near own goal by the Defenders stayed out after hitting the post. Pertuz finally put the visitors ahead in the 28
th minute, taking a nice thru-ball from
Aadil Mendez (Bartonsville, PA/Pocono Mountain East) and ripping a shot from 16 yards out just inside the far post. Mendez's assist marked the sophomore's fourth helper of the season.
After taking the 1-0 lead into halftime, Keystone pushed to extend their lead, but was unable to do so thanks to some outstanding goalkeeping from Defenders' netminder Dillon Bowman who came up big on multiple occasions, including a diving save on a point-blank chance from Mendez while also thwarting the conference's leading scoring,
Eddy Enowbi (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook), on a breakaway.
The Defenders were able to capitalize at the other end by taking advantage of a well-played restart to level the game at 1-1 in the 75
th minute. Ben Howell served the set piece from just inside the midfield stripe into the Giants penalty area where Kyle Brasshard skimmed a header past Keystone goalkeeper
Anthony Cutillo (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee).
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in a back-and-forth final 15 minutes of regulation as Keystone headed to overtime for first time this season.
Baptist Bible had the first chance over the extra session with an early corner kick, but Keystone defended the set piece well to set up Pertuz's heroics at the other end. In the game's 97
th minute,
Franklin Villatoro (Germantown, MD/Clarksburg) lobbed a pass of the host's defense the Pertuz ran onto and slotted past Bowman for the game-winner.
Pertuz's sixth goal of the season also marked the senior's sixth career game-winning goal, four of which have come in overtime, while Villatoro's assist was his CSAC-leading eighth helper of the fall.
Keystone doubled up the Defenders in shots for the game, 18-9, while holding a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. The Giants also generated eight corner kicks on the afternoon compared to two for Baptist Bible.
Cutillo posted four saves to pick up his sixth win of the season in goal for Keystone while Bowman finished with five stops for the Defenders.
Keystone will close out the regular season on Saturday at home against Immaculata. The Giants will honor Pertuz, the team's lone senior, prior to Saturday's contest against the Mighty Macs which is scheduled to kickoff at 6:30 p.m. on Keystone's turf field.
