Cazenovia, NY –
Ashley Evans (Wooster, OH/Wooster) scored a game-high 31 points and hit the game-winning three-pointer with seven seconds left in regulation to lift Keystone College to a thrilling, 98-96 victory at Cazenovia College in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday night. The Giants, who trailed by eight points with 3:43 left in regulation, improve to 2-1 with the victory while keeping the Wildcats winless in three contests on the year.
Evans, who went 9-18 from the field with six made three-pointers while going a perfect, 7-7 from the free throw line, is off to a torrid start this season, averaging 30.3 points per game through Keystone's first three games. The senior led four Giants in double-figures on Tuesday as
Jazmyn Robinson (Hyattsville, MD/Northwestern) netted 15 points while
Samantha Donahue (Taylor, PA/Riverside) and
Alyssa Cuomo (Odessa, DE/Hodgson Vo-tech) scored 13 points apiece in the win.
The two teams battled tightly through the first 10 minutes of the Tuesday night's game with Keystone building a 27-21 advantage at the 10:02 mark when
Jerica Rode (Lords Valley, PA/Wallenpaupack) connected on a three-pointer. The Giants pushed their advantage to 33-25 with just over eight minutes remaining in the opening half when Maria DeMartin scored on a layup, but Cazenovia battled back to tie the score at 38-apiece with 4:13 showing the clock.
Keystone went back in front when Donahue hit the front end of a pair of free throws and the Giants pushed their lead to 45-40 at the 2:33 mark when Cuomo connected on a three-pointer, but the Wildcats scored the final seven points of the period to take a 47-45 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Cazenovia, who got seven points from D'Andrea Watston in the opening 20 minutes of play, shot 43.9 percent from the field in the first half while going 4-10 from three-point range and 7-9 from the free throw line while six Wildcats chipped in six points apiece in the period.
Evans paced the Keystone with 13 points in the first half while Cuomo netted eight points in the period as the Giants connected on 41.7 percent of their field goal attempts while going 5-13 from beyond the arc and 10-14 from the charity stripe.
Cazenovia pushed their lead to as many as six points early in the second half before Keystone was able to forge back in front at 55-53 with 16:07 on a three-pointer from Evans. The Wildcats would go back in front 32 seconds later and the two teams would trade baskets over the next 10-plus minutes. A three-pointer by Robinson with 5:19 remaining gave the Giants an 82-81 edge with 5:19 left in regulation, but Cazenovia countered with the next nine points of the game to hold a 90-82 advantage with 3:43 left on the clock.
A lay-in by Watson with 30 seconds remaining gave the hosts a 96-91 edge, but Evans kept Keystone alive with a trey 10 seconds later to bring the visitors to within two points. A steal by Robinson gave the Giants the ball back and the senior found Evans, who knocked down the game-winning shot with seven seconds left to pay. Cazenovia took a shot at the buzzer to try to force overtime, but it would not go as Keystone secured their second-straight victory.
Robinson led all players with seven steals and seven assists on the night while Evans added four steals and four assists.
Cierra Hensley (Frederick, MD/Frederick) led Keystone on the glass with eight rebounds while Rode chipped in nine points and blocked three shots on the evening.
Chelsey Hropovich (Seward, PA/Ligonier Valley) added a pair of blocks for the Giants, who forced Cazenovia into 28 turnovers while giving the ball over 17 times themselves.
For the game, Keystone shot 44 percent from the field and 47.8 percent from beyond the arc including a 6-10 performance from downtown in the second half. The Giants also shot 65.6 percent from the foul line.
Erin O'Malley finished with a team-high 17 points to lead five Wildcats in double-figures and finished with a double-double after pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds. Cazenovia held a 50-35 advantage in rebounding on the night while connecting on 46.8 percent of their field goal attempts, 38.5 percent of their shots from beyond the arc, and 82.6 percent at the line.
Keystone returns to action on Saturday afternoon with a non-conference game at Albright College. Opening tipoff between the Giants and Lions is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Reading, Pennsylvania.
