St. Davids, PA – Eastern University used a 14-4 run to close the first half of Tuesday evening's non-conference women's basketball game against Keystone College to build a 19-point lead at the break and never looked back on their way to a 94-64 victory. The Eagles, who never trailed in the game, lift their record to 4-1 on the season while the Giants slip to 2-4 after suffering their third straight setback.
Eastern built a 14-6 lead over the first six minutes of Tuesday night's contest before a
Shatia Silas (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) layup following a three-pointer from
Alyssa Cuomo (Odessa, DE/Hodgson Vo-tech) cut Keystone's deficit to three points with 13:02 remaining in the first half. The Eagles would score the next eight points of the game and pushed their lead to 14 points before the Giants drew back to within seven points at 29-22 with 6:25 left on a lay-in by
Samantha Donahue (Taylor, PA/Riverside).
Leading 39-30 with 4:06 left in the opening stanza, Eastern outscored the Giants 14-4 the rest of the frame to take a 53-34 lead into halftime after shooting 42.2 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play while going 5-15 from three-point range and 10-13 from the free throw line.
Meghan Nowak scored 18 points in the first half to pace the Eagles while Emily Lavin added 17 points and 12 rebounds in the period.
Cuomo led Keystone with nine points in the first half while
Jazmyn Robinson (Hyattsville, MD/Northwestern) netted six points for the Giants, who connected on 41.9 percent of their field goal attempts in the half while going 3-5 from beyond the arc and 5-10 from the charity stripe.
Keystone scored the first four points of the second half before Eastern countered with an 8-1 run to hold a 61-39 advantage with 16:48 left in regulation. The Giants were able to trim their deficit to 14 points midway through the period, but the Eagles would maintain a double-figure lead the rest of the way while pulling away with the victory.
Lavin finished a game-high 29 points while leading all players with 18 points for Eastern, who also got a double-double from Nowak on 22 points and 11 boards. Gina DiDomenico and Kaitlyn Dougherty added 11 points apiece for the Eagles, who got a game-high seven assists from Emily McPeak. The hosts shot 42.0 percent from the floor for the game, 37.5 percent from beyond the arc, and 82.4 percent from the free throw line while holding a 55-37 advantage on the glass.
Robinson led Keystone with 13 points to go along with five rebounds and a team-best five assists. Cuomo scored 11 points to go along with five caroms while
Cierra Hensley (Frederick, MD/Frederick) chipped in with nine points for the Giants.
Jerica Rode (Lords Valley, PA/Wallenpaupack) also corralled five rebounds to tie with Robinson and Cuomo for the team-lead. The visitors finished the evening shooting 38.3 percent from the field, 42.9 percent from downtown, and 57.7 percent from the line.
Keystone will open Colonial States Athletic Conference play next Wednesday night when they travel to Allentown, Pennsylvania to take on Cedar Crest College. Opening tip between the Giants and Falcons is set for 7:00 p.m.
