Nazareth Keep Keystone Winless With 89-78 Victory Over Giants

Lunsford paces Giants with 28 points and nine rebounds in loss

Rochester, NY – Maurice Mills scored a game-high 38 points and led all players with 16 rebounds to lead host Nazareth College to an 89-78 victory over Keystone College in non-conference men's basketball action on Saturday night at Nazareth's Kidera Gymnasium.  The Golden Flyers level their record at 1-1 on the year while the Giants remain winless in four contests on the young season.

Duncan Lunsford (Marietta, GA/Sprayberry) led Keystone with 28 points on seven field goals and a perfect, 13-13 effort from the free throw line while corralling a team-best nine boards in the loss.

Nazareth built a 21-11 lead just over eight minutes into Saturday night's contest before Keystone used a 10-2 run to cut their deficit to two points with 5:57 remaining in the opening half on a Lunsford layup.  The Giants then forged ahead, 28-27, when Lunsford connected on a pair of free throws, but the Golden Flyers were able to take a 33-30 lead into halftime of closing the period with a 6-2 spurt.

Mills paced Nazareth with 11 points while Mitch Ford tallied eight points in the opening 20 minutes of play as the hosts shot 34.5 percent from the field in the first stanza while going 3-9 from three-point range and 10-15 from the free throw line.

Lunsford paced the Giants with 16 points while Miles Dargan (Orlando, FL/Wekiva) netted six points in the first half.  Keystone connected on 29.0 percent of their field goal attempts in the period while going 3-16 from downtown and 9-11 from stripe.

Darien Wingate (Brooklyn, NY/Christiana) tied the contest at 37-37 just over two minutes into the second half before Nazareth went back in front by scoring the next seven points of the game.  Keystone was able to cut their deficit to three points at 57-54 midway through the half on a pair of made free throws by Jesse Longmire (Harlem, NY/John S. Burke Catholic), but the hosts countered with a 16-5 run that gave the Golden Eagles a 73-59 advantage with 6:26 remaining in regulation.

The Giants came to within seven points on a Dan Candemeres (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) trey with just over a minute remaining, but were unable to come any closer as the Nazareth went 6-8 from the free throw line in the final minute.

Mills went 14-19 from the floor and 10-13 from the line to score his game-high 38 points for the Golden Flyers, who also got double-digit points from Ford (14), Josh Gillard (13), and Jack Mulcahy (12 points).  Ford added 10 boards to complete a double-double of his own as Nazareth held a 56-37 advantage in rebounding for the game.

For the game, the Golden Flyers went 44.4 percent from the field, 35.7 percent from beyond the arc, and 66.7 percent from the free throw line.

Lunsford was joined in double-figures by Longmire's 16 points and Dargan's 12 points on the evening.  Wingate added seven boards while Lunsford (4) and Dargan (3) paced Keystone in the assist column.

The Giants, who shot 35.3 percent from the field for the game, 21.9 percent from three-point range, and 76.7 percent from the line, held a 30-18 advantage in points off the bench for the game.

Keystone will look to break into the win column on Wednesday evening when they host Centenary College in a Colonial States Athletic Conference scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center.
