La Plume, PA – Keystone College won the opening set over defending Colonial States Athletic Conference champion Cabrini College in Thursday night's conference showdown, but the Cavaliers rallied to win the next three sets to remain unbeaten in the CSAC this fall. Cabrini improves to 20-6 overall and 10-0 in the conference with the four-set victory while the Giants slip to 17-5 on the year and 7-2 in league play.
Keystone raced out to a 7-1 lead in the opening set of Thursday's contest, but Cabrini battled back, eventually tying the score at 17-17. The two teams traded points of the next few plays. With the score deadlocked at 22-aside,
Shatia Silas (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) picked up a kill and the Cavaliers committed a pair of errors around a kill of their own as the Giants claimed a 25-23 win in the first set.
Cabrini used a six-point run to open up a 12-6 advantage in game two and Keystone was unable to come closer than within three points the rest of the way as the Cavaliers tied the match with a 24-18 decision. In the third set, the two teams went point for point and were tied at 14-14 before Cabrini went on a four-point run and again, the Giants were unable to come closer than three points as the Cavaliers took a 2-1 edge with a 25-19 victory.
Cabrini jumped out to a 10-2 start in the fourth frame, but a five-point run by Keystone brought the hosts to within three points. The Cavaliers were able to open up an 18-11 advantage before staving off a late surge by the Giants to seal the victory with another 25-19 set win.
Jen Grenauer and Nicole Sokolovich led Cabrini with 13 kills apiece with Sokolovich added nine digs. Christin Ingargiola added nine kills for the Cavaliers, who hit .213 on the night.
Cassidy Koenig led all players with 40 assists to go along with 12 digs while Kelly Guarino led Cabrini with 13 digs. Chelsea Jones collected a team-high three aces in the victory of the Cavaliers.
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area) paced Keystone attack with 11 kills and the junior added 12 digs for her sixth double-double of the season.
Kristen Larkin (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added nine kills while Silas,
Carol Mosier (Hunlock Creek, PA/Lake-Lehman), and
Ashley Williams (Virginia Beach, VA/Green Run) had five kills each for the Giants, who posted a .167 hitting percentage in the loss. Williams also recorded a match-best four aces on the evening.
Mosier dished out a team-leading 17 assists to go along with six digs while
Sydney Binkley (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) added 16 helpers.
Pamela Heitman (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) led Keystone with 14 digs while
Victoria Homfeld (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) added six digs for the hosts. Silas led all players with four blocks while
Taylor Beatty (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) contributed three blocks on the conference setback.
Keystone will host Immaculata University on Saturday in key conference tilt that will also serve as the Giants' Dig Pink match. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center.
