La Plume, PA – Zachary Oster scored the game-winning goal 7:26 into overtime to lift visiting Marywood University to a 2-1 victory over Keystone College in an exciting Colonial States Athletic men's soccer game on Saturday afternoon. The Pacers level their overall record at 6-6-3 on the fall and improve to 5-1-1 in league action while the Giants slip to 6-7-1 overall and 3-4 in the CSAC.
Keystone is currently tied for the sixth and final CSAC playoff spot with Cairn University aside both sides currently have nine points apiece on the season with the Giants holding the head-to-head tiebreaker. Gwynedd Mercy University lurks in seventh place with seven points and the Griffins hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over Keystone as the teams enter the final week of the regular season.
Marywood took a 1-0 lead just 1:34 into Saturday afternoon's contest as Daniel Hull served in an out-swinging corner kick, that was misplayed by Keystone goalkeeper
Adam Zbiciak (Saint Johns, MI/St. Johns) in over line for an own goal to give the Pacers the early edge.
Kouassi Kouadio (Mount Pocono, PA/Pocono Mountain East) drew Keystone level at 1-1 in the 27
th minute of action with his second goal of the game. After Marywood goalkeeper Justin Sunseri made a nice diving stop on the freshman's first shot, Kouadio followed up his own rebound and deposited it in the back of the net to tie the score.
Keystone nearly went ahead with 13 minute left in the half, but
Abreham Kittel (Trumansburg, NY/Charles O. Dickerson)'s blast from 20 yards out skimmed off the top of the crossbar and out of play. Kittel had another great chance with just under five minutes to play, but a great diving save before
Matthew Sim (Tomball, TX/Tomball Memorial)'s rebound chance was blocked by a defender.
Zbiciak made a spectacular save in the dying seconds of the first half to keep the game scoreless, fully extending to his right to deny Hull's effort from the top of the box and the two teams went into halftime deadlocked at one-apiece.
Sunseri came up big again for Marywood with 17 and a half minutes left in regulation, again denying Kittel, who found himself open 16 yards from goal, only to have his shot to the far post foiled. Keystone had another great chance in the 78
th minute, but
Djavan Guy (New York, NY/St. John's Prep)'s effort from the left side of the box went just outside of the near post.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net before the second half expired to send Keystone into overtime for the third time this season.
The Giants fired off the first three shots in extra time, but were unable to place any of those efforts on target. At the other end, Marywood was able to cash in on their first shot of overtime as Casey Peckio played a restart from the corner of Keystone's 18-yard box that snuck through a maze of players to Oster, who tapped in the game-winner at the back post in the 98
th minute of play.
Marywood held a slim, 21-19 edge in shots for the game including a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Pacers also generated 11 corner kick chances to four for the Giants.
Sunseri picked up the win in goal for the visitors after making five saves while Zbiciak also turned in a five-save effort in the loss for the hosts, who also had a pair of goal-bound shots cleared off of the line by defenders.
Guy led the Giants with six shots in the game while Kittel attempted four shots including two on goal. Kouadio and
Rolando Rodriguez (Linden, NJ/Linden) had three shots apiece in the loss.
Keystone will travel to Aston, Pennsylvania on Tuesday night to take on Neumann University in a critical conference match that will start at 7:00 p.m.
