La Plume, PA –
Brittany Sugalski (Nanticoke, PA/Greater Nanticoke Area) scored 53 seconds into overtime to send Keystone College to their first-ever Colonial States Athletic Conference women's soccer playoff appearance as the Giants rallied from a two-goal second half deficit to defeat Cairn University, 4-3 on Tuesday night. Keystone improves to 7-8-1 this fall and secures at least the #5 seed in the upcoming conference tournament by ending the regular season with a 7-4 mark in league play.
Sugalski finished the game with a goal and an assist while
Jenna Moranski (Gardiner, NY/New Paltz) added a goal and three assists to lead the Giants to the thrilling, come from behind victory over the Highlanders (7-10, 5-6 CSAC).
After hitting the left post with a shot in the 27
th minute, Cairn broke the scoreless tie in the 32
nd minute when Payton Emerick one-touched home a cross served in by Alyssa Leister from the baseline to give the visitors the 1-0 edge. Meghan Wilson doubled the Highlanders lead in the 38
th minute with a one-touch finish on a service from the right side from Leister. Alicia Geistdorfer also picked up an assist on the second goal of the game.
Cairn took the 2-0 lead into halftime after holding a slim, 10-8 edge in shots in the opening half.
Keystone cut their deficit in half just 1:44 into the second half when
Nina Carbonaro (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) head home a cross from Moranski to make it a 2-1 game. The Highlanders countered just under four minutes later as Emerick tallied her second goal of the game by knocking in a rebound from 15 yards out after
Katelyn Coon (Selden, NY/St. John the Baptist ) made a great save on Geistdorfer's initial shot to give Cairn a 3-1 edge.
Moranski brought the Giants back to within a goal in the 62
nd minute, running onto a long outlet pass from Sugalski and ripping a shot from 22 yards out in over the head over Cairn goalkeeper Mackenzie Paugh to narrow the host's deficit to 3-2.
The Giants leveled the score at 3-3 in the 74
th minute when
Gina Carbonaro (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) netted her second goal of the season, tapping in a pass across the goalmouth from Moranski with
Jayleen Galeno (Passaic, NJ/Scranton) also picking up an assist on the tying goal.
Both teams had opportunities to win the game over the remainder of regulation, but Coon and Paugh were up to the task each time to send Keystone into its fourth overtime game of the season.
Keystone wasted little time in punching their postseason ticket in overtime as Moranski laid a ball back to Sugalski from the baseline where the junior one-timed a shot into the far side of the net just 53 seconds into extra time to complete the Giants' dramatic, comeback win.
Both teams attempted 21 shots in the tightly contested game with Keystone holding a narrow, 17-16 edge in shots on goal. Cairn doubled up the Giants in corner kick chances, 8-4.
Coon earned her second win in goal on the season by making a season-high 12 saves while the Giants defense also cleared a ball off the goal-line late in the second half.
Paugh suffered the loss despite making 13 stops for Cairn, whose playoff hopes were dashed with the loss.
Keystone will await the results of Thursday's game between Centenary College and Cedar Crest College which will determine the Giants' seed and opponent for the CSAC playoffs, which will start on Monday. A Cedar Crest win would give the Giants the #4 seed and a home game against Centenary while a win by the Cyclones would put Keystone at the #5 seed and set up a game at Marywood University on Monday.
