Gwynedd Valley, PA – Ariety Fellenz scored with just 12 seconds remaining in the first overtime period on Wednesday night to lift Gwynedd Mercy University to a 2-1 victory over Keystone in Colonial States Athletic Conference women's soccer action. The Griffins improve to 5-3-2 overall and 3-1 while dealing the Giants (4-5-1, 4-1 CSAC) their first defeat in conference play this fall.
Gwynedd Mercy took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute of Wednesday night's contest when Meghan Petroski headed home a cross served in by Megan Gifford for her eighth tally of the season. Keystone answered back in the 27th minute as
Nisa Cortes (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) picked up a loose ball in the box and slid a shot under Griffins' goalkeeper Jess Tadley to level the score at 1-1. Cortes's goal was the freshman's team-leading fifth tally of the season and fourth in as many games.
The two sides went into halftime knotted at one-apiece with the Griffins holding a 9-2 advantage in shots for the period while collecting four corner kick chances to none for the Giants in the opening 45 minutes of action.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second half as Keystone headed to overtime for the third time on the season.
Sarah Heintz (Glenside, PA/Abington) forced the extra time by making six saves in the stanza as Gwynedd Mercy dominated the half, outshooting the Giants by a 14-1 margin.
Heintz denied a shot by Petroski three and a half minutes into overtime and the Giants blocked another shot attempt by the Griffins with 39 seconds remaining, but Gwynedd Mercy's third shot of the overtime would prove to be the game winner. Grace Macnamara served a ball into the box that Fellenz headed past Heintz for her seventh tally of the season which ended the game in favor of the Griffins.
Gwynedd Mercy finished the game with a 26-3 advantage in shots including a 10-3 edge in shots on goal. The Griffins also generated 11 corner kicks to just one for the Giants on the night.
Tadley made two saves to pick up the win in goal for the hosts while Heintz suffered the loss despite making seven stops in nearly 100 minutes of action for Keystone, who also had a ball cleared off the goal line by a defender.
Cassie Ehrhart (Stamford, NY/Stamford Central) led the Giants with two shots on goal on the night.
Keystone will visit Neumann University on Saturday for another CSAC contest that will kickoff at 1:00 p.m. in Aston, Pennsylvania.
