La Plume, PA – Keystone College outscored Penn State Berks 26-9 in the final 10-minute period of Saturday afternoon's women's basketball game in the Gambal Athletic Center to pull away with an 83-65 victory.
Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, NY/Paramus Catholic) and
Maddy Moro (Danville, PA/Danville Area) recorded double-doubles in their collegiate debuts to lift the Giants to the 18-point victory.
Penn State Berks (0-1) scored the first six points of Saturday's non-conference match-up and would hold a 22-18 advantage after the first quarter. Keystone (1-0) used a 14-1 run in the second period to claim a 32-25 lead with 4:46 remaining in the stanza as
April Acosta (Bronx, NY/Evander Childs) hit a three-pointer and the Giants would go on to hold a 41-38 edge at halftime.
Moro and Hall had 12 first half points apiece to lead Keystone, with Moro adding seven boards and Hall collecting six boards in the first 20 minutes of play.
Daynara Elysee (Spring Valley, NY/Ramapo) dished out three assists to lead the hosts, who shot 34.8 percent from the field in the first half while hitting on just two three-point attempts while going 7-11 from the free throw line.
Deanna Daddona paced Penn State Berks with 15 points in the first half while Cassidy Shultz and Mackenzie Adame chipped in eight points in the first two quarters for the Nittany Lions, who shot 36.7 percent from the floor in the half including a hot, 58.3 percent clip from downtown and 50 percent from the charity stripe.
Keystone opened a seven-point advantage early in the third period before the Nittany Lions used an 8-0 run to claim a 48-47 edge. A layup by Hall put the Giants back to the point and the Giants would take a narrow, 57-56 lead into the final 10-minute period.
Penn State Berks scored the first field goal of the fourth quarter to take a one-point lead, but Acosta answered with another trey to kick start a 17-2 run for Keystone that gave the hosts a 74-60 lead with 5:51 remaining and the Nittany Lions were unable to cut their deficit into single digits the rest of the way.
Hall finished with a game-high 21 points after coming off the bench to go along with 10 rebounds and six steals while Moro also added a double-double on 12 points and a team-best 11 boards.
Samantha Donahue (Taylor, PA/Riverside) totaled 13 points to go along with three assists,
Dyjae Williams (Newark, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) added 11 points and a game-high four helpers, while Acosta tallied 11 points while leading all players with seven steals.
Keystone, who held a 55-48 advantage in rebounds for the game, shot 37.2 from the floor on the day, 17.4 percent from three-point land, and 71.4 percent from the stripe.
Daddona paced Penn State Berks with 20 points while Shultz and Julie Pietrobono added 11 points apiece. Mackenzie Huber pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds for the Nittany Lions, who shot 30.9 percent from the field in the loss while going 35 percent from downtown and 57.1 percent from the line.
Keystone returns to the hardwood on Monday evening with a non-conference game at the Pratt Institute. Opening tipoff between the Giants and Canonneers is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in Brooklyn, New York.
