Summit Spoils Keystone’s CSAC Opener, 87-79

Jones scores a season-high 24 points in loss to Defenders

Clarks Summit, PA – Tyree Jones (Harlem, NY/Holcombe L. Rucker) scored a season-high 24 points and ShaShawn Drayton (Monticello, NY/Monticello) added his second double-double of the season, but it wasn't enough on Wednesday night as Keystone College dropped their Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball opener at Summit University, 87-79.  The Defenders, who got a game-high 27 points from Dan Decker, improve to 1-6 on the season and 1-1 in conference play while the Giants remain winless in four contests (0-1 CSAC).

Keystone opened up a 15-9 lead 5:19 into Wednesday night's contest when Khyle Diaz (East Miramar, FL/Pembroke Pines Charter) connected on a three-pointer, but Summit countered with a 13-2 run to hold a 22-17 lead with just over 12 minutes remaining in the first half.  Drayton followed up a James Cooper (Freehold, NJ/Pius X) three-pointer to tie the score at 22-apiece.  Holding a 29-28 edge with 6:47 remaining in the first stanza, the hosts went on a 12-2 stretch to open up a 41-30 advantage at the 3:34 mark before taking a 48-36 lead into halftime after leading by as many as 14 points in the stanza.

Decker led all players with 14 points in the first half while Abe Valentine added 10 points and five assists for Summit, who shot a solid, 53.1 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play while going 30.8 percent from three-point range and knocking down 10 of 15 free throw attempts.

Deion Monroe (Kingston, NY/Kingston ) paced Keystone with 10 first half points while Drayton added six points and seven rebounds.  The Giants connected on 41 percent of their field goal attempts in the first half including a 23.5 percent effort from downtown while missing their only three free throw attempts in the period.

Summit extended their lead to 17 points early in the second half before Keystone used a 13-4 run to cut their deficit to 59-51 with 15:30 remaining.  The hosts went back up by 11 points before Keystone surged to within five points, 71-66, with 8:26 on a three-point play by Cooper.  Decker responded for the Defenders with a jumper followed by a three-pointer to push the host's lead back to 10 points with six minutes remaining and the Giants were unable to cut the gap any closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Decker's game-high 27 points came on an 8-13 effort from the floor and 7-8 performance at the line.  Adam Brinkley contributed a double-double for Summit on 13 points and 10 rebounds, Dwayne Felder netted 13 points, and Valentine finished with 12 points and a game-high seven assists.  The Defenders finished the contest shooting 45.2 percent from the floor including a 40 percent clip from three-point land while going 69.7 percent from the charity stripe.

Jones went 11-15 from the field to finish with a season-best 24 points for Keystone while also leading the squad with four assists and pulling down seven rebounds.  Drayton netted his second double-double in the last three games on 10 points and a season-best 15 boards.  Monroe and Cooper added 13 points apiece while Devin Williams (Monticello, NY/Monticello) contributed eight points in the loss.  Monroe and A.J. Newell (Hackensack, NJ/Hawthorne Christian Academy) had two steals apiece for the visitors, who connected on 47.8 percent of their field goal attempts in the game including a fine, 57.1 percent showing in the second half.

Keystone, who held a 37-32 edge on the glass in the loss, went 26.1 percent from long range for the game and 42.9 percent from the line.

The Giants return home on Saturday afternoon when they host Rosemont College in a CSAC battle scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center in La Plume.
