Nina Hodanich (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) scored a career-high 22 points and
Bryce Garrett (Philadelphia, PA/John Bartram) also added a career-best 17 points to power Keystone College to a 67-57 victory over Notre Dame of Maryland University in Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon. The Giants lift their overall record to 4-3 on the season and 1-2 in conference play while the Gators slip to 3-4 on the year and 0-2 in the CSAC.
The first period of Saturday's contest was a back-and-forth affair with Notre Dame opening the largest lead of the stanza at 17-13 with a minute remaining, but Hodanich scored the final five points of the frame to give Keystone an 18-17 edge after 10 minutes of play. The Gators opened the second period with a 7-0 run to claim a 24-18 advantage and would go into halftime with a 30-28 lead.
Zaria Comer led Notre Dame with 10 points in the first half while Stephanie Roche netted seven points in the opening 20 minutes of play for the Gators, who shot 39.3 percent from the floor in the first two periods while going 2-8 from three-point range and 6-9 from the free throw line.
Hodanich's 12 points in the first half paced all scorers,
April Acosta (Bronx, NY/Evander Childs) grabbed four rebounds, and Garrett chipped in with four points and two assists for the Giants, who connected on 34.5 percent of their field goal attempts in the half while going 2-6 from beyond the arc and 6-12 from the line.
Notre Dame pushed their lead to five points early in the third period before Keystone battled back to tie the game at 35-35 when
Maddy Moro (Danville, PA/Danville Area) connected on a jumper midway through the period. Tied at 38-apiece with 2:17 left in the frame, Hodanich drained a three-pointer to put the Giants back in front and the visitors extended their lead to 46-40 heading into the final 10 minute stanza.
The Gators opened the fourth period with a three-pointer to draw within three points, but Keystone answered with an 8-0 run to claim a 54-43 lead with six and a half minutes remaining when
Brianna Nolen (Union Bridge, MD/Walkersville) connected on a three-pointer. The Giants would go on to lead by as many as 14 points while Notre Dame was unable to come closer than nine points the rest of the way.
Hodanich's team-high 22 points came on 7-16 shooting including a 5-7 effort at the free throw line. Garrett went 4-9 from the field and 8-11 from the line to total her career-best 17 points. Nolen added seven points while Moro and
April Acosta (Bronx, NY/Evander Childs) chipped in with six points apiece for Keystone, who shot 40.4 percent from the floor on the day including a 41.7 percent effort from downtown and a 54.1 percent performance from the charity stripe.
Acosta paced the Giants on the glass with nine rebounds to go along with six steals, while Hodanich and Moro totaled six boards apiece. Hodanich also collected a game-high seven steals for the visitors, who forced the Gators into 35 turnovers while giving the ball away 23 times while Moro blocked a pair of shots in the win.
Comer finished with a game-high 23 points for Notre Dame while Roche added 16 points for the Gators, who shot 34.5 percent from the field on the day, 35.7 percent from long range, and 70 percent from the stripe. Justice Walrath snagged a game-high 10 rebounds for the hosts, who held a 38-34 edge on the glass in the loss.
Keystone will close out the calendar year on Wednesday night with a non-conference game against undefeated Albright College (7-0). Opening tipoff between the Giants and Lions is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center in La Plume.
