Myrtle Beach, SC – Guilford College used a six-run second inning to break open a tight contest while pitcher Maggie Shaffer allowed just one hit as the Quakers defeated Keystone College 10-0 in a non-conference softball game in South Carolina on Monday morning. Guilford improves to 8-5 overall with the victory while the Giants remain winless in three contests on the young season.
Guilford took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of Monday's game on a wild pitch before claiming a 7-0 advantage with a pair of home runs including a two-run shot and a grand slam, in the second inning.
The Quakers tacked on two more runs on the third frame on a two-run single and capped the scoring by taking advantage of a Keystone error in the home fourth inning.
Antonette Scialpi (Hughestown, PA/Pittston Area) broke up Shaffer's no-hit bid with a leadoff single to right field in the top of the fifth inning, but Shaffer closed out the game by inducing outs on the next three plays.
Caroline Barnette and Taylor Boyd had two hits apiece for Guilford, whose grand slam was hit by Rachel Howard. Shaffer finished the game with seven strikeouts to earn the win on the mound.
Karissa Worobey (Scranton, PA/Scranton) suffered the loss for Keystone after allowing 10 runs – only five of which were earned – on nine hits while striking out a pair of batters.
Keystone returns to the diamond on Tuesday with a pair of games as the Giants will play Mount Saint Vincent College at 9:30 a.m. before taking on Frostburg State University at 11:30 a.m.
