Myrtle Beach, SC – Keystone College's softball team split a pair of games on Tuesday at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach. The Giants, now 1-4 on the season, earned their first victory of the season in Tuesday's opener against Mount Saint Vincent College 2-1 on a walk-off double from
Sarah Stacey (Shickshinny, PA/Lake-Lehman) before dropping an 8-0 decision to Frostburg State University in their second game of the day.
In Tuesday's first game against Mount Saint Vincent (0-4), the Dolphins took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Rachel Heizer scored on an RBI single to right field from Casey Cuccio, but Keystone kept it a one-run game by throwing out a second runner at the plate.
Mount Saint Vincent would hold the one-run lead until the bottom of the sixth inning when
Emily Long (Shamokin, PA/Lourdes Regional) smacked a two-out base hit to right field that scored
Kimberly Rivera (New York, NY/South Bronx Campus) to level the game at one-apiece.
With the score still knotted,
Sara Schraden (Allentown, PA/William Allen) hit a leadoff double to left field to start the bottom of the seventh inning, and after the Dolphins recorded an out, Stacey ripped a double to left field that scored Schraden from second with the winning run to give Keystone their first victory of the season.
Schraden, who led the Giants with two hits in the game, also picked up the win on the mound after pitching a perfect final 2.2 innings with two strikeouts. Starting pitcher
Karissa Worobey (Scranton, PA/Scranton) went 4.1 innings in the circle and surrendered the lone run on four hits while fanning a pair of batters.
Mount Saint Vincent starter Kathryn Dalton suffered the loss despite going the distance on the mound while yielding two runs on six hits while striking out two batters.
In Tuesday's nightcap against Frostburg State (5-2), the Bobcats scored a pair of runs in the second inning before breaking out with six runs in the third inning while Hannah Tavik allowed just one hit while earning the complete game shutout.
Emily Zengel got the scoring started with a two-run double in the bottom of the second inning. Renay Aubel followed suit with a two-run double of her own in the home third and the Bobcats claimed a 6-0 lead by scoring runs on a passed ball and an error later in the inning. Frostburg State scored the final two runs of the contest on a two-run single by Taylor Blevins.
Tavik allowed only a leadoff double to Rivera in the fourth inning while walking three batters and recording four strikeouts in the win on the mound.
